Springfield, Mass. – April 16, 2013 – The Springfield College baseball team erupted for a season-best 24 hits to defeat Nichols College, 16-0, in non-conference play on Tuesday afternoon at Berry-Allen Field.
Mike McGowan had a terrific day at the play, going 4-for-5, scoring four runs, and driving in three more to help Springfield improve to 11-15. Nichols fell to 4-23 on the season with the loss.
CJ Monroe started things off in the first, doubling to right to score Shane OÂ'Leary and McGowan.
In the second inning, Springfield plated four more runs to go up 6-0, and tacked on two more runs in the fourth as McGowan lead off with a triple and came around after Brett Poulin ripped a double in the gap. Matt Milano added a sacrifice fly in the frame before the Pride opened up the sixth with four more runs, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple by McGowan.
Ryan Gower and OÂ'Leary combined for six hits and scored seven times, while Poulin chipped in with two extra base hits and two RBI. Starting pitcher Travis Lane was dominant on his end, tallying nine strikeouts and seven hits in 7.1 innings of work.
For Nichols, Benjamin Harrow, Nick Shaw, and Jon Micciche each registered two hits in the contest. Chris Bruno shouldered the loss, allowing eight runs, four earned, off 11 hits.
The Pride will play for the fifth-straight day on Wednesday evening when it travels to square off with local-foe Elms College at 7:30.
