Baseball Shuts Out Clark, 2-0, Behind Lane's Complete Game

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. – April 2, 2013 – The Springfield College baseball team posted a shutout for the second time in its last three games as it blanked visiting Clark University, 2-0, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at a chilly Berry-Allen Field on Tuesday.

Springfield improve to 6-9 with the victory and is now 3-6 in league play. The Cougars dropped to 5-16 and are 1-9 in conference action.

Both pitchers went the distance for their respective teams, with Springfield’s Travis Lane picking up his first victory of the season. The junior gave up just six hits in nine innings of work while striking out three and walking a pair. Clark’s Michael Mainuli took the loss despite a strong effort, as he was charged with two unearend runs off four hits. The Cougars defense didn’t help out his cause, committing five errors on the afternoon.

In the bottom of the first, Frank Calabrese reached on a fielderÂ's choice and later scored on Mike McGowanÂ's RBI single to give the hosts the early lead.

Springfield tacked on the game’s only other run in the third inning. Steve Starr took first after a catcherÂ's interference was called, moved to second on a Kyle DiFranco single, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Calabrese. Starr would eventually score on a Clark infield error, giving Lane all the run support needed en route to the complete game shutout.

Springfield combined for only four hits in the contest, while Clark scratched out six singles, with Michael Eglow, Brian Sullivans, and Matt Asdornvuttikrai each recording two base knocks.

The Pride and Cougars will play each other again on Wednesday in Worcester. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
