Springfield, Mass. – April 22, 2013 – The Springfield College baseball team surrendered eight runs in the sixth inning as it was defeated by visiting Amherst College, 10-2, at Berry-Allen Field on Monday in a non-conference showdown.

Amherst improves to 19-6 with the win, while the loss brings the Pride’s record to 12-18 this season.

Frank Calabrese, Steve Starr, and CJ Monroe all had two hits in the loss for Springfield. Despite a strong start, Alex Williams was charged the loss after giving up seven runs off eight hits. He did strike out eight in just 5.1 innings of work.

For Amherst, Brendon Hardin went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, while teammate Connor Gunn collected three hits. John Cook tossed six-innings of five-hit ball, allowing one earned run and registering seven strikeouts, en route to the victory.

Springfield scored the game’s first run in the fourth inning to take an early lead. After Starr led off the frame with a single to center, he moved to second on a sacrifice and took third on a Ryan Gower single. He would then cross the plate on a wild pitch.

The Lord Jeffs evened the game in the fifth as Quinn Saunders-Kolberg came around to score from second on a Jonathan Ramirez base knock to left.

In the sixth, the visitors erupted for eight runs off eight hits to put the game out of reach. The frame was highlighted by a bases-clearing triple by Hardin.

A pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth by Robert Lucido drove in Amherst’s final run, before Monroe belted a a single in the bottom of the ninth to plate Calabrese.

Springfield will not play again until next Monday when it hosts MCLA at 3:30 pm.
