Babson Topples Baseball, 7-3

Springfield, Mass. – April 5, 2013 – The Springfield College baseball team was defeated by visiting Babson College, 7-3, at Berry-Allen Field in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

With the loss Springfield dropped to 7-10 overall and 4-7 in the conference and Babson improved to 10-8 overall and 4-5 in the conference.

Babson never trailed in the game and got the scoring off in the second when Dillon Gonzalez singled to right field to drive in Sean MacPhee. The Beavers added a pair of runs in the second, thanks to consecutive RBI doubles from Chris Kutcher and Conor Kortman.

Babson put the game away in the ninth when Kutcher doubled in two runs and later scored on KortmannÂ's single. Kutcher and Kortmann led the Beavers offense combining for six hits and six runs batted in. Trevor Boyce chipped in with three hits and two runs.

For Springfield, Frank Calabrese crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the third and also singled in a run in the fourth and in the ninth. Catcher Sean Smith had a big day from behind the plate, throwing out three Babson base runners.

Babson owned a 15-7 advantage in hits for the game, with Calabrese recording a pair for the hosts.

Derek Richards earned his second win this season, going 8.2 innings surrendering three runs and striking out 11 for Babson. Greg Marakovits took the loss, as he went 8.1 innings allowing seven runs on 15 hits fanning five.

The Pride plays a doubleheader tomorrow at Babson Park first pitch 12:00 pm.
