New London, Conn. – September 17, 2013 – Despite a second-half goal from Kelly Gallo (Westfield, Mass.), the Springfield College field hockey team could not complete its comeback as it lost to host Connecticut College, 2-1, in non-conference play on Silfen Tuft Field Tuesday evening.
The Camels improve their record to 2-1 with the victory while the Pride slips to 1-3 with the setback. Junior co-captain Jen Morgan (Orange, Conn.) and first year defender Maggie Wells (Darien, Conn.) scored first half goals to lead the Camels to victory.
Connecticut College opened the scoring with 22:50 remaining in the first stanza. Sophomore forward Shaelin Gottlick (Madison, Conn.) assisted Morgan for a goal with a well-placed cross.Â
Later on with 6:02 to play in the half, the Camels extended their lead. This time, the hosts cashed in on one of their eight penalty corners. Â Springfield was able to break up the initial insertion pass but junior Andrea Hoisington (Brownsville, Vt.) gained possession in the circle and dished the ball off to Wells for another Camel score.
Springfield did not go away and with 26:13 remaining in regulation, as Gallo unloaded for her fourth goal of the season to make it a 2-1 game. Gallo dribbled all the way through the midfield and displayed her power with a hard hit that found its way into the right side of the cage. Â
The Pride continued to hang around but the Connecticut College defense was able to keep the visitors off the scoreboard. After the Camels held possession with consecutive corners in the final two minutes, Springfield regained possession and made one last push into the Camel zone.Â
However, junior Mallory Kosow (Exeter, N.H.) was able to control and clear the ball to seal the victory for the hosts.
Springfield College sophomore keeper Timarie Villa (Mashpee, Mass.) made four saves in the loss. Connecticut College junior Becca Napolitano (Hamden, Conn.) finished with two saves in the triumph.Â
Connecticut College held a 6-to-3 advantage in shots and a slim 8-to-7 edge in penalty corners.
