WPI Rallies Past Men's Soccer, 2-1

Worcester, Mass. - October 11, 2014 - The Springfield College men's soccer suffered a 2-1 setback against WPI in a battle amongst New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foes on Saturday morning at Alumni Field.

With the loss, the Pride fall to 5-4-5 and 1-2-1 in the NEWMAC, while the Engineers, who were ranked No. 7 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) regional rankings, improve to 11-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Junior goalkeeper Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) finished the contest with a game-high four saves, while his counterpart, Connor Hoeckele (Granby, Conn.) finished with a pair of his own. Both sides posted nine shots in the contest, while the Engineers held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

With 6:08 remaining in the opening half, junior defender Connor Archambault (Torrance, Calif.) found the back of the net to give the Pride a 1-0 advantage. Archambault knocked home a deflected shot by senior Ryan Malone (Chicopee, Mass.) into the lower-right corner of the net for his second goal of the season.

With 21:06 left in the contest, a foul by Springfield in the box rewarded the Engineers with a penalty kick, which Eric Crevoiserat (Glastonbury, Conn.) converted to even the game at one goal apiece.

Just 8:36 later, Nate Peterson (Mashpee, Mass.) found the back of the net to give WPI a 2-1 lead with 12:30 remaining in the contest.

Springfield will resume play on Saturday, October 18 when it will return to Brock-Affleck Field to host Babson College in a crucial NEWMAC contest. The game is slated for 1 p.m.
