Box Score Springfield, Mass. - October 11, 2014 - Freshman forward Kimberly Quiles (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) proved to be the difference maker for the Springfield College women's soccer team as the first-year struck with 17:27 remaining in the contest to help the Pride edge Wheaton College, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon on Brock-Affleck Field.
Following a Wheaton foul at the with just under 18 minutes remaining in the second half, a free kick sent in by senior captain Kelly Haines (Easton, Conn.) bounced off the shoulder of a Wheaton defender and deflected right to Quiles who then tipped a ball past Wheaton goalkeeper Ali Hinton (Lafayette, Colo.) to give the Pride a 1-0 edge late in the game.
The Pride, who were receiving votes in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Regional Rankings, improved to 6-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. With the loss, Wheaton falls to 7-6-1 overall and 1-3 in the NEWMAC.
The Lyons held a 10-8 advantage in shots, while Springfield posted eight corner kicks to just one from the visitors. Senior goalkeeper Lucy Gillett (Rockville Center, N.Y.) finished the contest with a game-high four saves, while Hinton finished the contest with a pair.
Springfield will resume play on Tuesday, October 14 when it will travel to Clark University for a NEWMAC tilt. The game is set for 6 p.m.
