Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - October 18, 2014 - Sophomore forward Taylor Gilfoy (Holliston, Mass.) scored his third goal of the season at the 31:45 mark of the second half, but the Springfield College men's soccer program fell to Babson College 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field in a contest amongst New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rivals.

With the loss, the Pride fall even to 5-5-5 overall and 1-3-1 in league play, while Babson, the 7th-ranked team in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Regional Rankings, improves to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the NEWMAC.

Junior goalkeeper Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) posted a six stops in the net, while counterpart, Tanner Click (Lawrence, Kans.) registered seven of his own and claimed the victory. The Beavers held a 17-10 advantage in shots, while Springfield received eight corner kicks to the visitor's 10.

Babson went into the half with a 2-0 advantage, thanks to contributions from Tyler Carlos (Prospect, Conn.) and Justin Kaplan (Medway, Mass.), while Gilfoy was the lone member of Springfield to notch a goal for the Maroon and White.

Opening the day's scoring at the 26:26 mark of the opening half, freshman defender Logan Ventura (Pittstown, N.J.) sent in a cross from the right side that skipped off the leg of a Springfield defender and deflected directly to Carlos who found the back of th net to give the Beavers a 1-0 edge.

With 5:04 remaining in the half, sophomore Shane Mandel (Syosset, N.Y.) sent in a cross from the right side that found Kaplan on the backside for the Beavers second goal of the contest.

Down 2-0 going into the second half, the Pride cut it's deficit in half at the 31:45 mark of the second half when freshman midfielder Curtis Bolduc (South Windsor, Conn.) gained control of the ball well outside the Babson defensive territory and lofted a ball into the box, that found a wide open Gilfoy who headed a ball past the outstretched hands of Click to cut the Pride's deficit in half.

Both teams battled hard in the remaining minutes of the game, as Springfield received a few late chances on the cage, but were not able to even the game as the Beavers fended off the late rally to ice the 2-1 victory.

The Pride will return to Brock-Affleck Field on Tuesday, when it will host Keene State in a non-conference match-up at 7 p.m.
