Windwer's Late-Game Heroics Lead Women's Basketball to Victory Over Marymount

Box Score

Daytona Beach, Fla. - Sophomore guard Lexi Windwer (Milton, Mass.) converted a three-pointer with 1:00 remaining on the clock to give the Springfield College women's basketball program a 60-59 lead, then converted a free-throw to seal the deal as the Pride were able to defeat Marymount University, 61-59 on Saturday afternoon in its second of two games at the Daytona Beach Shootout.

With the win, Springfield has evened its record out at 4-4, while the Saints fall to 7-3 on the year. The Pride shot an even 50 percent from the field in the contest, going 23-for-46, while Marymount shot 24-for-60 (40%) on the day.

For the Pride, junior Heather Lewis (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) posted a team-high 21 points, while Windwer netted 16 of her own. Senior forward Jaimie Bickelhaupt (Brookfield, Conn.) registered 14 points and six rebounds in the victory, while senior guard Andrea Moschetta (Harrison, N.Y.) tallied a game-high nine assists. For the Saints, junior Kievanna Lacey (Morrisville, Pa.) led with 17 points, and sophomore Kiki Laux (Chantilly, Va.) posted 15 in the loss.

After trailing 9-6 in the early goings, the Pride went on an 8-0 run after Bickelhaupt converted on a lay-up, which was followed by back-to-back three-pointers from the senior and Windwer to give Springfield a 14-9 lead with 13:26 left in the first half.

Midway through the frame, the Saints pulled back to within four, but Moschetta found sophomore center Ava Adamopoulos (Ludlow, Mass.) beneath the basket for a lay-up in which she converted to push Springfield's lead to six.

After a bucket from Miranda Krott (Temple, Pa.) with 30 seconds remaining to make the score 32-26 in the Pride's favor, Lewis found Windwer outside the three-point arc and the sophomore converted from deep to give Springfield a nine-point lead at the break.

The Saints kicked off the second half on an 15-3 run, capped off by a pair of free-throws from Lacey to give Marymount a three-point lead with 14:22 remaining in the contest. Just 1:46 later, Lewis came up with a big steal for the Pride and knocked down a jumper on the other end to even the score at 42 apiece. From there, Windwer and Lewis converted on back-to-back triples to give the Pride a six-point advantage midway through the second half.

Battling down the stretch, Leah Hurst (Crofton, Md.) netted a three-pointer for the Saints with 1:16 remaining, which gave Marymount a 59-57 lead, but on the ensuing possession, Windwer took a pass from Bickelhaupt and hit a three-pointer to give the Pride the final lead of the contest and the win.

Springfield will be back in action on December 30, when it will host Connecticut College in the first round of the Hampton Inn West Springfield/Naismith Classic at Springfield College. The game will start at 1 p.m.
