Lane Hurls One-Hitter As Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Trinity

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Leesburg, Fla. – March 16, 2014Travis Lane (Canton, Conn.) tossed a one-hitter in the nightcap to help the Springfield College baseball team earn a doubleheader split with Trinity College on Sunday. The Bantams won the opener, 3-0, before Lane powered the Pride to a 3-1 victory.

In the opening game, Trinity loaded the bases and plated two runs in their first at bat.  In the bottom of the inning, Springfield started their season by putting two runners in scoring position with no outs thanks to a Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) single and Corey Wilcox (Montville, Conn.) double.  Trinity starter, Peter Burrows, came up with three clutch outs to strand the runners, which set the tone for the game.  In the third inning, Springfield loaded the bases with one out, but Burrows escaped again by picking up two key outs, highlighted by an athletic defensive play by Bryan Wolfe at first base to end the inning.

Trinity took advantage of two Springfield miscues in the top of the sixth, grabbing a 3-0 lead.  In the bottom of the inning, SpringfieldÂ's CJ Monroe (Wolcott, Conn.) picked up a two-out single, before pinch runner Ryan Gower (Barrington, R.I.) swiped second base.  But Burrows picked up another clutch strikeout to end the threat, capping a strong start on the hill for the Bantams.  Patrick Carbone relieved Burrows in the seventh, recording a scoreless frame to earn the save and finish off the complete game shutout for the Bantams.  Springfield stranded a runner in scoring position in the final inning, and seven in the game.

Burrows went six innings, struck out eight and walked none while allowing just four hits in the game. Bryan Wolfe and MacKenzie Grenauer each recorded two hits and a stolen base to lead the Bantams offensively.  After a shaky first inning for Springfield starter Oliver Collette (Spencer, Mass.), the junior settled down, finishing with five strikeouts to one walk in 5.2 innings, allowing three earned runs in the game.  Starr picked up two hits in the leadoff spot for Springfield, while Adam Zandri (Ridgefield, Conn.) picked up a pinch hit single in his first collegiate at-bat for the Pride.

The second game was another pitcherÂ's dual, won by Springfield’s starter Lane, who pitched a complete-game one-hitter, allowing just one unearned run in seven innings of work.

In the first, Springfield loaded the bases with one out to start things off.  The Pride picked up a run on an infield single, before Trinity starter Ryan Carr notched a strikeout to end the early threat.  The Bantams responded in the bottom of the inning, as Daniel Pigeon singled through the right side, setting up a first and third situation.  Wolfe knocked a run in to even the score at 1-1, before a strikeout and caught stealing ended the inning.

Carr and Lane cruised through the ensuing innings, backed by strong defensive play on both sides.   Springfield finally got to Carr in the sixth, while Lane continued to keep the Bantam bats off balance. In the sixth, Springfield snagged a 2-1 lead when Wilcox led off the inning with a single, and came around to score on an opposite field double by Sean Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.).  In the following at-bat, Monroe hit a double to the gap to score Smith to provide the Pride with an insurance run.

In the bottom of the frame, Lane allowed a base runner before inducing a double play to end the inning.  Lane was as strong in the seventh as heÂ'd been all game, putting Trinity down in order to secure the one-hitter for the Pride.

The Pride will play again on Monday against UMass Dartmouth at 4:00 pm.
