Baseball Battles 14 Innings With MIT in Suspended Game

Box Score

Cambridge, Mass. – March 25, 2014 - The Springfield College baseball team battled through 14 innings on Tuesday, ending with a 1-1 suspended game with host MIT. The New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game was halted due to darkness.

It was Springfield’s longest game since playing 14 innings with St. John’s on March 19, 2011. When resumed, it will be the longest game since Springfield played 17 innings in 2003. Springfield (5-4-1, 0-2-1 NEWMAC) got on the board in the top of the first, taking an early 1-0 lead. Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) tallied a lead-off single, then advanced to third on two-straight ground ball outs. CJ Monroe (Wolcott, Conn.) brought Starr home on a two-out single to center field.

Springfield’s starting pitcher Alex Williams (East Hartford, Conn.) threw five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits while striking out five. Springfield’s three relievers, Mitchell Goldman (Uxbridge, Mass.), Peter Baranski (Hamden, Conn.) and Dan Green (Oakland, N.J.) combined for nine innings, allowing just six hits and one run. The trio gave up just two walks and tallied five strikeouts.

MIT threatened in the third inning, getting a leadoff walk from senior Creed Mangrum (Sandy, Utah) that was followed by a double to left center by freshman John Drago (Peoria, Ariz.), but Williams bounced back by retiring the next three Engineers in order.

MIT tied the game up in the sixth inning as K.J. Parent (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit a solo home run to left field. Springfield tallied two-straight outs, but Parent got ahold of a pitch to get the Engineers on the board.

In the bottom of the 12th, the Engineers had runners on the corners with one down. The Pride drew their infield in and it paid off as Kendall Helbert (St. Louis, Mo.) hit a grounder to short that sophomore Dan Bergami (Schenectady, N.Y.) was able to field and then throw home for the out.

Springfield threatened in the top of the 14th, as Billy Paskowski (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single to left field. Frank Calabrese (East Longmeadow, Mass.) sacrificed Paskowski to second, then Monroe was intentionally walked. A ground ball out moved the runners to second and third, but a foul ball out ended the inning.

In the bottom of the 14th, Green retired the side in order with back-to-back fly ball outs and a strikeout to end the inning. The 15th inning was not started due to darkness. The two teams combined to leave 24 runners on base over 14 innings.

The game was continued on April 3rd at home, requiring just one extra inning to be completed. Billy Peterson (Wareham, Mass.) led off the 15th inning with a walk, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jared Wilcox (Montville, Conn.) delivered the go-ahead run on an RBI single to right center, scoring Peterson for a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Matt Butrym (Schenectady, N.Y.) got the win on the mound for Springfield, allowing just one hit and no runs in one inning of work.
