Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Wheaton

Norton, Mass. – March 29, 2014 - The Springfield College baseball team dropped a doubleheader at Wheaton on Saturday, despite solid offense from Frank Calabrese (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Sean Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.).

Wheaton 7, Springfield 1:

Smith led the Pride, going 2-for-3 at the plate while Oliver Collette (Spencer, Mass.) went 6.2 innings for the Pride, allowing just two runs, one earned and and four hits, while tallying six strikeouts.

Wheaton got on the board with one run in the first inning, as Kevin Foley scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Lavanchy. The Lyons tallied an unearned run in the third off a fielding error to take a 2-0 lead.

The Pride held Wheaton scoreless until a four-run eighth inning, where the Lyons jumped ahead to a 6-0 lead.

Springfield got on the board in the bottom half of the inning, when Calabrese scored on a passed ball. Wheaton tacked on an extra run in the ninth to make it a 7-1 final.

Wheaton 9, Springfield 2:

In game two of the doubleheader, Calabrese led the Pride offensively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Smith also brought in a run and went 1-for-4 from the plate.

Eric Chase (Vernon, Conn.) held Wheaton without a hit for the first two innings, retiring the side in order in the second.

The Lyons took an early 2-0 lead in the third, then posted a pair of runs in the fourth, scoring off a solo home run and a sacrifice bunt to go ahead 4-0. The Lyons made it a 7-0 game in the sixth and scored two more in the eighth off two RBI singles.

Springfield got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the eighth. Billy Paskowski (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) had a lead-off single to start the inning, then was brought home by Calabrese on a two-out single to center field. Smith singled up the middle to score Shane O’Leary (Kings Park, N.Y.), making it a 7-2 game. The ninth inning wasn’t played due to rain.

Springfield falls to 5-6 overall and 0-4 in the NEWMAC and will play again on Monday, traveling to Westfield State for a 3:30 p.m. start.
