Baseball Beats Clark in Extra Innings, Splits Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Worcester, Mass. – April 12, 2014 - Billy Peterson (Wareham, Mass.) delivered the go-ahead run in the 10th inning to lead the Springfield College baseball team to a 3-2 win over host Clark on Saturday. The Pride split the doubleheader at Granger Field, picking up a key New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win.

With the split, the Cougars now stand at 7-18 overall and 4-9 in league contests, while the Pride, who took two of three in the series, improves to 11-10 but more importantly are now 5-7 – a game and a half ahead of Clark in the NEWMACÂ's West Division standings.

Springfield 3, Clark 2 (10 innings):

The game was tied 2-2 going into the tenth when the Pride pushed across the go ahead run. A leadoff single by Shane OÂ'Leary (Kings Park, N.Y.) was followed by Ryan Gower (Barrington, R.I.) moving him into scoring position with a sacrifice. He went to third on a wild pitch and after one out, Peterson brought home the game-winning run with a single to left, scoring O’Leary.

Springfield took a 1-0 lead in the third when Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) singled to center sending home Brent Poulin (Atascadero, Calif.), who led off the inning with a single.

Clark got the run back in the bottom of the frame when a Conway groundout with the bases loaded evened the score.

Clark pitcher Miles Sheehan (Madison, Conn.) then sat down eight straight batters until a Peterson triple to center was followed by an Adam Zandri (Ridgefield, Conn.) RBI basehit.

As they did in the third the Cougars answered back with a run to tie the score. This time the run came courtesy of a Conway solo shot to left.

Clark had a chance to take the lead in the seventh when they loaded the bases with one out after singles by Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.) and Chochrek and a walk by OÂ'Brien. Peter Baranski (Hamden, Conn.), however, came in to retire the next two batters without giving up a run, setting the stage a few innings later for the game-winning run.

Baranski was superb out of the Pride bullpen, tossing 3.2 innings of hitless relief to earn the win.

Sheehan went all ten innings for the Cougars, striking out 11 while throwing 124 pitches.

Both teams are back in action on Sunday. The Pride travels to Emerson for a 3:00 p.m. start, while the Cougars step out of conference for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch against Bates.

  Clark 9, Springfield 0:

Despite two-hit performances from Poulin and Billy Paskowski (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), the Pride fell 9-0 in game one of the doubleheader.

Clark broke open a scoreless game in the third when they pushed four runs across, highlighted by a Daniel Lima (Manchester, Conn.) RBI single and a two-run double from Matt Asdornvuttikrai (Winchester, Mass.).

The Cougars were back at it in the fourth when three straight singles by Adam Chochrek (Foxboro, Mass.), Nicholas OÂ'Brien (Potomac, Md.) and Zach Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) was followed up by a Lima sacrifice fly to left.

Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) added another run in the seventh when he sent Asdornvuttikrai home after he doubled to lead off the inning.

Asdornvuttikrai then delivered a big blow in the eighth, when he crushed a three-run homer to left field that scored both James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) and Richall both who reached earlier in the inning on singles to left.

Derek Dubois (Haverhill, Mass.) scattered eight hits in a complete game shutout, walking two and striking out three to improve to 4-2. At the plate, Asdornvuttikrai was equally as effective going 3-for-5 with a homerun, two doubles and five RBI.
