Fifth Inning Surge Lifts Baseball to 14-1 Win Over Emerson

Malden, Mass. – April 13, 2014 - The Springfield College baseball team scored six runs off five hits in the fifth inning to earn a commanding 14-1 over host Emerson on Sunday.

With the win, Springfield improves to 12-10 on the year and 6-7 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) while Emerson drops to 3-21 overall and 1-12 in conference play.

Eric Chase (Vernon, Conn.) was lights out on the mound, going seven innings for the Pride with no earned runs and seven strike outs. On the bats, Frank Calabrese (East Longmeadow, Mass.) led the way for the Pride with a 3-for-4 day with two runs scored and two RBIs wile CJ Monroe (Wolcott, Conn.), Keith Cotnoir (Westhampton, Mass.) and Anthony Faggiana (Woodbridge, Conn.) all pushed across two RBIs as well. Brent Poulin (Atascadero, Calif.) and Jared Hopkins (Cranston, R.I.) each had a two-hit day for Springfield.

The Pride were able to put one across in the first inning after an error by the Lions, but Emerson knotted it up in the bottom of the third for a 1-1 game.

The Pride’s bats fired up in the fifth as they went off for six runs off of five hits. Calabrese brought home Hopkins and Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) on an RBI single to center field, making it a 3-1 game. Faggiana drove in two more runs on a single to left, scoring Adam Zandri (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Calabrese for a 5-1 game. Monroe came home on a wild pitch and Springfield tacked on its sixth run of the inning on a single by Shane O’Leary (Kings Park, N.Y.) to go ahead 7-1.

Springfield put up another run in the sixth before and went ahead 10-1 in the eighth, as Dan Bergami (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Cotnoir each scored.

The Pride would spark up a lethal ninth as well with four more runs off three hits to close out the 14-1 win.

Springfield will continue its stretch of seven games in six days, playing at home on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On Monday, Springfield welcomes Brandeis to Berry-Allen Field for a 3:30 p.m. start.
