Women's Tennis Wins 10th Match of the Season, 9-0 Over Salve Regina

Springfield, Mass. – April 13, 2014 - The Springfield College women's tennis team is in the midst of its best season since 1996, beating visiting Salve Regina, 9-0 on Sunday.

With the win, Springfield improves to 10-7 on the season. This is the first time the Pride has won 10 matches in a season since 1996.

Springfield swept singles and doubles play over Salve Regina on Sunday. The doubles duo of Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Stephanie Foster (Woodbride, Conn.) won first doubles over Hayley Maxwell and Liz Liquori by a score of 8-2. At No. 2 doubles, Mel Thulin (Manchester Center, Vt.) and Arianna Shemms (Goshen, Conn.) bested Taylor Amendola and Alia Barefoot by a score of 8-3, while the third doubles pair of Sydney Streimer (Mystic, Conn.) and Alanna Grady (Springfield, Mass.) beat Isabelle Weatherby and Julie Grant, 8-1.

At No. 1 singles, London won by walkover, while Streimer took No. 2 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 10-5, battling back to win the final two sets over Liquori. Thulin won third singles, 6-2, 6-0 over Amendola, while Foster cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles, beating Barefoot. At fifth singles, Shemms won, 6-1, 6-0 over Weatherby and Kelsey Whelpley (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) took No. 6 singles by a score of 6-3, 6-1 over Grant.

The Pride will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting Endicott at 3:30 p.m.
