Women's Lacrosse Falls to Babson, 9-7, in NEWMAC Semifinals

Norton, Mass – April 26, 2014 - Despite a late rally, the Springfield College women's lacrosse team fell 9-7 to Babson College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) semifinals on Saturday afternoon at Wheaton College.

With the loss, the Pride fall to 8-9 overall and will now be forced to wait until May 4 to find out if they will gain an at-large berth into the NCAA Championship tournament. The selection show is set to begin at 9:30 p.m.

Senior goalkeeper Anne Versprille (Franklin, Mass.) finished the contest with five saves on 19 shots from the Beavers. Babson goalkeeper Julie Baharestani (Syosset, N.Y.) finished the game with a pair of stops and the victory.

Just 55 seconds into the contest, Kayla Farina (Newton, Mass.) buried a shot past Versprille to give the Beavers a 1-0 edge. Minutes later, Babson extended their lead to two after Kiley Fischer (Marblehead, Mass.) found McKenzie Tucci (Winchester, Mass.) for her 16th goal of the season.

At the 16:33 mark of the first half, Rachel Secrist (Westford, Mass.) netted her team-leading 55th goal of the season to put the Beavers up 3-0. Just 43 seconds later, freshman midfielder Francesca Giovanucci (Easton, Mass.) extended Babson's lead to four.

At the 4:58 mark of the first stanza, sophomore Connie Nielsen (Sayville, N.Y.) netted her 29th goal of the season to get the Pride on the board. Just minutes later, Nielsen found senior Emily Fowler (Branford, Conn.) for a goal to cut the deficit to two heading into halftime.

Opening the second frame, Secrist notched her second goal of the game, only to have Nielsen score her second just 1:31 later to keep the Pride within two. At the 26:01 mark of the second half, sophomore Emily Rodgers (Durham, N.H.) notched her 18th goal of the season off a feed from Michelle Dorsey (Wilbraham, Mass.) to pull the Pride to within one.

With 23:23 left in the contest, Secrist found Giovanucci for a goal to make it 6-4, Beavers, and just 59 seconds later, Katie McKenna (Sandwich, Mass.) found Fischer for a goal to make it 7-4, Babson.

Quickly avenging the pair of goals from the Beavers, Nielsen tacked on her third tally of the game on a free-position shot to pull the Pride back to within two.

After Secrist completed her hat trick to put Babson up 8-5, Rodgers received a pass from Nielsen and tallied her second goal of the game to bring the Pride back to within a pair.

Late in the contest, Dorsey netted her first goal of the day off of a feed from Nielsen to bring the Pride to within one goal with 6:48 remaining. Just 1:30 later, Secrist notched her fourth goal of the game to push the Beaver's lead back to two and sealing the 9-7 victory.
