Cambridge, Mass. – April 6, 2014 – After falling in game one of a double header on Sunday afternoon at MIT, 2-1, the Springfield College softball team cruised to an 9-0 victory over the Engineers.
Following the games, Springfield now stands at 9-5-1 overall and 2-2 in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. MIT now stands at 7-11 on the season and 4-4 in conference play.

Springfield’s leadoff batter, Christina Leader (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), scored the first run of the game in the first inning when she was walked, stole second off a strikeout and was sent home off a double by sophomore Melissa Nelson (Milford, Conn.). However, it did not take long for the Engineers to even the score when Mackenzie Donnelly (Helena, Mont.)Â led off the second inning by doubling and advancing to third on a wild pitch. On a sacrifice fly by Monica Shifflet (Poway, Calif.), Donnelly was able to score.
In the bottom of the eighth, with freshman Helen Rosenthal (Bethesda, Md.) placed on second, classmate Natalie Shifflet (Poway, Calif.) singled and advanced to second, allowing Rosenthal to move to third. When junior Karly McLaughlin (Edwardsville, Ill.) had a sacrifice fly to left field, Rosenthal made it home.

In game two, senior Jennifer Joseph (Stamford, Conn.) pitched five strong innings. allowing one hit and posting five strike outs, while Nelson drove in two runs of her own. Junior Brittany Lally (Hudson, Mass.) posted a team-leading five RBIs in the victory.
In the top of the first inning, a triple from Brielle Engelbrecht (Granby, Mass.) drove home Nelson to spark a 6-0 run for the Pride, giving Joseph some run support on the mound.
In the top of the sixth, Lally drove home Engelbrecht and Johanna Burke (Oxford, Mass.) to give the Pride a 9-0 cushion, heading into the late stages of the game.
Springfield will be back in action on Tuesday, April 8, when they will head to Keene State to take on the Owls in a double header. The games are set for 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
