Springfield, Mass. – August 12, 2014 - Takehiro "Hiro" Iwatsuki has been named the varsity men's and women's tennis coach at Springfield College, according to Springfield College Director of Athletics Cathie Schweitzer.

The appointment is effective in late August. Iwatsuki replaces Toby Coffin, who resigned in May.

Iwatsuki has been at Springfield College since 2012 when he began working towards his Master of Science degree in Athletic Counseling.  During that time, he has also worked as a graduate assistant coach with the tennis programs.

"I would like to thank the athletic department for this an amazing opportunity as I am truly honored to be the head men's and women's tennis coach at Springfield College," said Iwatsuki.  "I'm excited to have the opportunity to lead the tennis programs moving forward and am looking forward to seeing all the returners and the first year players as we work together to achieve our goals. "

"Hiro has done a great job as an assistant coach with our men's and women's programs and we are thrilled to have him assume the leadership role for us. "said Schweitzer. "He has demonstrated great knowledge of the game and tremendous passion and enthusiasm. We are excited about his future as head coach."

A native of Japan, Iwatsuki has an extensive background in both coaching and teaching as he earned both his Bachelor and Masters degree in Physical Education from Nihon University.  He has gained experience as an athletic counselor at both Springfield College and Harvard University, and has had multiple research articles related to tennis published.

In addition to serving as a coach at both the Shintokoroza and Meidaimae Tennis Clubs, Iwatsuki was also the assistant men's tennis coach at Nihon University.  During his time in America, he has worked at the KenMont and KenWood Camps in Connecticut as well as the United States Air Force Academy Tennis Camp in Colorado.
