Women's Volleyball Splits Opening Night of MIT Invitational

Cambridge, Mass. - September 12, 2014 - The Springfield College women's volleyball team defeated Connecticut College in four sets at the MIT Invitational on Friday afternoon.

Heading into the weekend, Springfield was among those teams receiving votes in the AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll.  The Pride now own a 5-1 records to begin the season.

Springfield opened up Friday's play with a four-set win over Connecticut College by the game scores of 25-22, 19-25, 25-16, 25-20.  In the nightcap, the Pride dropped a three-set match to DeSales by the scores of 25-15, 25-19, 28-26.

In the win over Connecticut College, Lauren Holt (Granby, Conn.) produced a team-best eight kills and four blocks, while Kelsey McGayhey (Shelter Island, N.Y.) delivered seven kills at a .545 clip.  Jennifer Hurwitz (Longmeadow, Mass.) tallied eight digs, five kills, and three aces and Meghan Kinee (Williamstown, N.J.) was credited with 12 digs.

The Pride struggled offensively against DeSales, posting a .163 hitting percentage in the three-set loss.  Holt was the lone bright spot as she had 10 kills and four blocks while hitting .400.

Springfield will continue its play in the MIT Invitational on Saturday when it plays Endicott at 11:00 am and Tufts at 3:00 pm.
