Box Score Springfield, Mass. - September 17, 2014 - Despite holding an 11-9 shot advantage at game's end, the Springfield College women's soccer team fell to Amherst College, 1-0, in a battle of regionally-ranked opponents on Wednesday evening at Brock-Affleck Field.
With the loss, the Pride, who is ranked No. 5 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Assosciation of America (NSCAA) regional rankings, surrender its first set back of the season, falling to 3-1-1 overall. The Lord Jeffs pick up its third win of the season, improving to 3-1 in 2014. The last time the two sides met was in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament, where the Lord Jeffs came out on top, 1-0.
Senior goalkeeper Lucy Gillett (Rockville Center, N.Y.) finished the contest with a game-high four stops, while her counterpart, Holly Burwick (New Canaan, Conn.) made three saves of her own, claiming the shutout.
With 21:56 remaining in the game, Amherst junior forward Megan Kim (Newport Beach, Calif.) kicked a ball deep into the Springfield defensive territory and freshman Hannah Guzzi (Southborough, Mass.) out ran the Springfield defenders to the ball and fired a shot past Gillett to give the Lord Jeffs a 1-0 advantage.
The Pride had a few chances late in the game with a flurry of shots towards the Amherst goal, but the Lord Jeffs defense held strong and Burwick made a point-blank save to preserve the shut out.
The Pride will host Coast Guard in its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference opener on Saturday back at Brock-Affleck Field at 2:30 p.m.
