Springfield, Mass.- September 18, 2014- Takehiro Iwatsuki picked up his first career victory as head coach of Springfield College women's tennis team this afternoon as the Pride defeated cross-town foe Western New England, 9-0, on Appleton Courts.
No. 1 doubles team of Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Stephanie Foster (Woodbridge, Conn.) led the way as they clipped their counterparts, 8-5. London went on to pick up the win in the No. 1 singles slot 6-2, 6-2, while Foster did the same at No. 2 singles as she produced a 6-1, 6-4 win.
Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn.) and Melanie Thulin (Manchester Center, Vt.) were also dominant, picking up the 8-4 victory in No. 2 doubles. Stephani Post (Westford, Mass.) and Rachel Litchfield (Northbridge, Mass.) completed the sweep as they picked up the third and final victory in doubles competition (8-3).
Thulin had a strong showing at No. 3 singles as she shut down Christina D'Agostino by the scores of 6-1, 6-1. Shemms notched a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5, and Kelsey Whelpley (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) rounded out the squad with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.
The Pride will look continue their momentum as it returns to the courts on Saturday against Emerson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
