Box Score Springfield, Mass. - October 10, 2015 - Sophomore defender Cam Powell (Housatonic, Mass.) scored the Pride's long goal in 5th minute of the contest, as the Springfield College men's soccer program posted a 1-0 win over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent WPI on Saturday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.
With the win, the Pride are now 10-2 on the year, sitting at 3-1 in league play. The Engineers fall to 9-4-1 on the year, with a conference record of 3-1.
Senior goalkeeper Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) finished the contest with one save, while WPI's Connor Hoeckele (Granby, Conn.) registered three stops in the game. Springfield held a 15-4 advantage in shots.
Just five minutes into the game, junior Luke Alvaro (Chicopee, Mass.) threw a ball into the box from the left sideline that was headed by sophomore Harrison Davis (Merrick, N.Y.), then finding the head of Powell, who finished to give the Pride a 1-0 lead over the Engineers.
WPI had its opportunity in the remaining minute of the first half as sophomore Andy Rottier (Planville, Conn.) sent a through ball into the box to freshman Ben Nickerson (Presque Isle, Maine). Schmid ran out toward Nickerson and made a slide tackle to keep the Engineer's scoreless. Ensuing the save with 20 seconds remaining, sophomore Danny Murphy (Old Saybrook, Conn.) was threatening to score from just outside the box, firing a shot just wide left of the cage.
Murphy nearly put the Pride up by two in the 61st minute, after being denied by the crossbar from a strike from 25-yards out.
Following Powell's early goal, the Springfield defensive unit was able to hold off the Engineers to secure their tenth win of the season, and third win in conference play.
Up next, Springfield will travel to Babson for a NEWMAC contest next Saturday at 1 pm.
