Box Score Springfield, Mass. - October 17, 2015 - Despite scoring the first goal of the contest, the Springfield College field hockey team suffered a 3-1 loss to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Wellesley College on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, Springfield is now 5-8 on the season, and 1-4 in conference play, while the Blue, which came into Saturday's contest ranked No. 11 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National poll, improves to 11-2 overall with a conference record of 5-1.
Senior goalkeeper Timarie Villa (Mashpee, Mass.) finished the contest with four saves, while her counterpart, Lucy Hurlock posted three stops in the win. The Blue held a 17-7 advantage in shots and 14-4 margin in penalty corners.
The Pride got off to a quick start just 10 minutes into the contest when senior midfielder
Kristina Krull (Leicester, Mass.) found sophomore
Dani Sweet (Charlton, Mass.) in the middle of the field, as Sweet gathered the ball and found the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
Wellesley's Hannah Flesch (Rockville, Md.) answered back for the Blue with 18:59 remaining in the first half, as she snuck a shot past Villa off a feed from Rachel Hwang (Campbell, Calif.). Wellesley tacked on another goal with just under a minute left in the first half after Cecie Negron (Midlothian, Va.) set up Nikki Sharkin (Summit, N.J.) for a goal, giving the Blue a 2-1 lead heading into the halftime break.
Anissa Sridhar (London, Ontario) closed out the Blue's scoring with 11:11 remaining in the contest when Hwang blasted a shot on net, which deflected off a Springfield defender and found the stick of Sridhar for the easy finish, giving the Blue some insurance.
Next up, the Pride travel to NEWMAC opponent Clark Univeristy on October 20th for a 7 pm start.
