Men's Soccer Closes Regular Season with 2-0 Win Over Coast Guard

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - October 31, 2015 - Behind goals from junior forward Luke Alvaro (Chicopee, Mass.) and senior A.J. Vico (Plymouth, Mass.) the Springfield College men's soccer program finished the regular season with a 2-0 win over Coast Guard in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.

With today's goal, Alvaro has now tied the single-season Division III program record for goals in a single season. In 2013, Ryan Malone '15 also registered 13, which tied the most a Springfield player has scored since the 1992 season.

With the win, Springfield improves to 13-3-1 (4-2-1), and closes the regular-season slate with a Division III program record .794 winning percentage. With the loss, Coast Guard finishes the season with a record of 5-12-1 (2-4-1).

Senior goalkeeper Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) finished the contest with two stops, while his counterpart, William Braga (Niantic, Conn.) registered ten stops on the afternoon. Springfield held an 17-3 shot advantage over 90 minutes of play, including a 10-1 edge in the first half, while also holding an 4-0 margin in corner kicks.

After a scoreless first half, the Pride broke the tie just 2:07 into the second half following a yellow card from freshman Noah Harper (Deland, Fla.), when Connor Archambault (Torrance, Calif.) took a free kick that was redirected into the back of the net by Alvaro for his team-leading 13th goal of the season.

With 12:10 remaining in the contest, the Pride had a chance to extend its lead to a pair when Archambault let a shot rip that tipped off the hands of a diving Braga and redirected off the cross bar to keep the Pride at a one-goal advantage.

Springfield gained a 2-0 lead on the Bears with 3:38 remaining in the contest, when senior forward Vico registered his third goal of the season. Vico took a pass from freshman Xavi Arroyo (Concord, Mass.) on the left flank and drilled the right upper 90 from well outside the box to extend the Pride's lead to two, and seal the victory for Springfield.

Up next, Springfield will enter the NEWMAC Championship Torunament for the first time since the 2013 season.
