Women's Lacrosse Eases Past Western New England, 19-9

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - February 28, 2015 - Led by an eight-goal performance from Michelle Dorsey (Wilbraham, Mass.), including the 100th of her career, the Springfield College women's lacrosse team eased past Western New England, 19-9, on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

Springfield improves to 2-0 on the year, while the Golden Bears dropped their season opener.

Dorsey put on an offensive show as she netted eight goals on 14 shots, while Heather Raniolo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) posted four goals and three assists.  Olivia Cabral (Sayville, N.Y.) handed out five assists, and Heather Raniolo and Kristen Steidler (Somers, Conn.) combined for 12 of the Pride's 19 draw control wins.  Gabriella Anderson (Mahopac, N.Y.) needed to make five saves in 47 minutes of action to earn the win.

Western New England was paced by Jessica Scannapieco, who tallied three goals, while Taylor Scialdone chipped in two goals and an assists.  The visitors played three different goalkeepers in the loss, and the trio combined to make eight saves.  The loss snapped the Golden Bears run of consecutive regular-season wins (23) and a 13-road win streak.

Springfield never trailed in the game as Dorsey scored three times in the opening 10:39 to give the hosts an early three-goal cushion. Dorsey's second goal of the contest made her the 14th player in program history to eclipse the 100 goal plateau.  WNE climbed within three on a pair of occasions in the first half, the last coming after Scannapieco buried a shot on the run to make it a 7-4 contest with 45 seconds left in the half.

However, Heather Raniolo batted a ball out of midair into the back of the cage as the horn sounded at the end of the first half as the Pride headed into the break with an 8-4 lead.

Scannapieco kicked off the second-half scoring at the 26:20 mark, but the Pride reeled off six unanswered goals by six different goal scorers, including four in a 1:55 span, to blow the game open.

The Pride would go on to lead by as much as 10, with Heather Raniolo's unassisted strike at 1:18 capping off the victory.

Springfield will now prep for a showdown with nationally-ranked Trinity on Tuesday, March 3 at 6:00 pm
