Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - February 7, 2015 - Behind double-digit scoring from five different players on the Springfield College men's basketball team, the Pride put on an offensive show and defeated Wheaton College, 96-64, on Saturday afternoon in Blake Arena.

With the win, Springfield, who set its season-high with 96 points today, improves to 15-6 overall on the season and 6-3 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play, while the Lyons fall to 4-16 on the season and 1-9 in league play.

This marks the first time since 2004-05 campaign that Springfield has rattled off sixth-straight wins. The Pride shot 36-for-65 (55.4%) on the afternoon in the victory, while Wheaton mustered 23-for-52 (44.2%) from the field in the loss.

Junior guard Alex Garstka (Westfield, Mass.) was the Pride's leading scorer with 21 points off the bench, while senior guard Sean Martin (Rindge, N.H.) posted another impressive performance, registering 16 points to go along with seven assists, three steals and two rebounds. Senior guard Josh Altman (Rockford, Mass.) netted 13 points and five rebounds of his own, while classmate and senior captain Nick Sienkiewicz (Cranston, R.I.) converted a pair of three-pointers and finished the game with 12 points.

For the Lyons, Eddie Capstick (Worcester, Mass.) was the leader with 19 points, 16 of which he tallied in the opening half, while Billy Battaglia (Simsbury, Conn.) posted 17 points on the afternoon.

Wheaton owned an early 14-9 advantage after Battaglia knocked down an elbow jumper with 12:16 remaining in the half.  Over the next five-plus minutes, Springfield found its offensive rhythm and rattled off a 17-2 surge to regain a 26-16 lead.  Garstka provided a great spark off the bench in the run, netting six points.

Another Battaglia bucket with 5:06 on the clock made it a 28-22 contest, only to have the Pride heat up from downtown, hitting four trifectas down the stretch to close out the half on a 16-7 burst to head into the break with a 44-29 cushion.

Coming out of the break, the Pride pushed its lead to 20 after a lay-up from Tim Swenson (Millbury, Mass.) at the 16:23 mark, before junior Larry Piretra (Oakland, N.J.) found Altman for a jumper to put the Pride up 58-34 with 14:25 left.

Holding a 70-39 lead midway through the second stanza after a steal and lay-up in transition from Garstka, Springfield went on a quick 10-2 run to ice the victory for the Pride.

The Pride will now prepare for a showdown with nationally-ranked Babson on Wednesday for a 7:00 pm clash.
