Late Rally From No. 7 Amherst Stifles Women's Lacrosse in Double Overtime

Box Score

Amherst, Mass. - March 12, 2015 - A pair of four-point performances from Kerstin Lindrooth (Byrn Athyn, Pa.) and Bianca Raniolo (Yorktown, N.Y.) paced the Springfield College women's lacrosse program, but the Pride suffered a heart-breaking 9-8 loss in double overtime to No. 7 Amherst College on Thursday evening at Pratt Field.

With the loss, the Pride fall to 5-2 overall on the season, while the Lord Jeffs, who were ranked 7th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) National Rankings, improve to 3-1 in the 2015 season.

Amherst came into the season ranked first overall in the IWLCA Preseason Poll after losing in the final four to Salisbury University, 8-4.

Lindrooth pumped in four goals on the evening, including three in the first half, while Raniolo netted a pair of goals and added as many helpers in the defeat. Senior midfielder Olivia Cabral (Sayville, N.Y.), who came into the contest ranked No. 5 in the nation with her 15 assists, added two more to her total in the contest.

For Amherst, Rachel Passarelli (Hamden, Conn.) led the way with four goals and one assists, but it was Devin O'Connor (Huntington, N.Y.) that proved to be the hero, netting her only goal of the contest in the second overtime period, lifting the Lord Jeffs to victory.

Springfield goalkeeper Gabriella Anderson (Mahopac, N.Y.) posted the most impressive performance of her young career, as the sophomore registered nine saves on 18 shots, including stops on a pair of free-position chances late in regulation and a pair of stops in the overtime periods that kept Springfield in the game. For the Lord Jeffs, Christy Forrest (Madison, Conn.) finished with four saves on 12 shots from the Pride.

After Passarelli opened the game's scoring with a goal off a feed from O'Connor just 3:36 into the contest, Lindrooth found the back of the net twice in a span of 2:11 including a free-position strike to give the Pride a 2-1 lead with 19:10 on the clock.

The two sides traded goals, with Meghan Mills (Fair Hills, N.J.) hauling in a pass from Passarelli and firing a shot past Anderson to even the score at two, before Raniolo helped the Pride regain its one-point lead after a pretty give-and-go with Cabral set up the marker.

Two goals from Passarelli and Mills from the Lord Jeffs gave the hosts a one-goal lead with 5:55 left in the first half, but Lindrooth completed her hat trick just 52 seconds later after capitalizing on a nice feed from Cabral to send Springfield into halftime even at four goals apiece.

Amherst came out firing in the second half when Sarah Spector (Narbeth, Pa.) found the back of the net just 56 seconds into the second frame, before freshman Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) evened the score on a free-position goal at the 27:08 mark.

With the game tied a six apiece after a goal from Mia Haughton (Princeton, N.J.) with 18:26 left, Springfield received scoring from Raniolo and Corsano to give the Pride an 8-6 edge, before Passarelli scored on a pair of free-position shots late to even the score and send the game into overtime, setting up O'Connor's late-game heroics.

The Pride will return to action on Sunday, March 15 when it will take on SUNY Oswego at Disney's Wide World of Sports at 11 a.m.
