Women's Lacrosse Storms Past Connecticut College, 10-6

Springfield, Mass. – March 6, 2015 – The Springfield College women's lacrosse team defeated visiting Connecticut College, 10-6, in non-conference play on Friday afternoon at Stagg Field. 

Springfield improves to 3-1 on the season, while Connecticut College evens its record to 1-1.

Olivia Cabral (Sayville, N.Y.) led all players with four points on a goal and three assists, while Bianca Raniolo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) added two goals and an assist.  Additoinally, Michelle Dorsey (Wilbraham, Mass.), Heather Raniolo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), and Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) each netted a pair of goals.  Gabriella Anderson (Mahopac, N.Y.) made two saves in goal to earn the win.

Connecticut College was paced by Hannah Donegan (Great Falls, Va.), who dished out three helpers, while Tina Balzotti (Duxbury, Mass.) posted two goals and an assist.  Meg Raskin (Westwood, Mass.) made six saves in the loss.

For the game, Springfield held a 17-10 advantage in shots and won 11 of the game's 18 draw controls, including four by Dorsey.

The Camels opened the scoring at the 22:33 mark on a goal from Madison Barker (Boston, Mass.) off a feed from Donegan.   The visitors added to its lead just under three minutes later on a goal from Balzotti, who found the back of the cage off a pass from Meag Irvine (Westwood, Mass.). 

Corsano answered back for the Pride when she struck low on a free-position shot with 16:27 left in the half, only to have Bianca Raniolo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) one-time in a terrific look from Cabral 51 seconds later to even the contest at two goals apiece. 

Springfield took the lead for good with 11:50 remaining in the opening half after Dorsey finished a great crease feed from Bianca Raniolo.

Bianca Raniolo continued to lead the Pride attack with an unassisted goal with 7:56 on the clock, and following a Camel turnover after a great ride by Dorsey, Cabral ripped a shot on the run, forcing the visitors into a timeout with 7:15 left in the first half.  Springfield went into the half with a 5-2 lead, thanks to an 11-4 advantage in shots.

Springfield continued its offensive push to begin the second half, getting a goal from Corsano and a pair from Dorsey in the first 5:49 to extend its lead to 8-2.

The Camels scored their first goal in over 30 minutes after Balzotti scored from Donegan with 18:01 left in regulation.  With 6:03 on the clock, Taylor Thomas muscled her way towards the cage and fired in a shot to make it an 8-4 contest.  Springfield got back on the board with a pair of goals Heather Raniolo at 5:28 and 1:19 to seal the game for the Pride with a six-goal cushion.  The visitors tacked on a pair of goals in the final 38 seconds to finish the scoring.

Springfield will play its third game this week when it hosts Plymouth State on Saturday for a 1:00 pm contest.
