No. 20 Women's Lacrosse Eases Past Coast Guard, 17-1

Springfield, Mass. - April 1, 2015 - Thirteen members of the Springfield College women's lacrosse program registered at least one point, as the Pride cruised to a 17-1 victory over the Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday evening on Stagg Field.

With the win, the Pride, which was ranked 20th overall in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) National Rankings, continue to get off to its best start in Division III program history, as it now holds a 9-2 record, and improves to 3-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. With the loss, the Bears fall to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in league play. 

Senior attack Michelle Dorsey (Wilbraham, Mass.) paced Springfield with a six-goal effort, while junior Bianca Raniolo (Yorktown, N.Y.) tallied four goals of her own in the victory. Senior attack Emily Rodgers (Durham, N.H.) finished with a team-high two assists. In net, sophomore goalkeeper Gabriella Anderson (Mahopac, N.Y.) and senior Carley Elkin (Guilford, Conn.) split time, as Anderson finished her time without having to make a save, while Elkin posted one in the second half. For the Bears, Angel Fay (Culver, Ind.) finished with a game-high six stops in the loss.

Springfield dominated all statistical categories, holding a 18-13 advantage in ground balls, an 11-9 advantage in draw controls, a 31-4 advantage in shots, and caused 26 Coast Guard turnovers.

Just 43 seconds into the contest, Dorsey opened the game's scoring with a free-position goal, before Kerstin Lindrooth (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) took a feed from Colleen Keeley (Agawam, Mass.) and found the back of the net with 24:00 on the clock to extend the Pride's lead to two. 

Capping off a transition started by freshman Ann Mahoney (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) was Bianca Raniolo, who pushed Springfield's lead to three at the 19:41 mark. Junior midfielder Heather Raniolo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made it 4-0 with 18:04 remaining in the first half, before Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) pushed the Pride's lead to five after taking in a feed from Rodgers and firing a shot past Fay.

Dorsey then completed her hat trick with back-to-back goals just 33 seconds apart from one another to make it 7-0, Springfield, before Kristina Krull (Leicester, Mass.), Dorsey, and Bianca Raniolo closed out the half with goals to make it 10-0 at the break.

Coast Guard opened the second half's scoring with a tally just 2:28 into the stanza from Ruby Surgent (Huntingtown, Md.), but after a caused turnover from Mahoney, Julia Bireley (Franklin, Mass.) picked up the groundball and found a streaking Corsano, who pushed transition and found Bianca Raniolo on the doorstep for her third tally of the contest with 20:35 left in the contest to push the Pride's lead back to 10. 

With 17:45 remaining, Dorsey picked up a ball in the defensive zone and went end-to-end and buried a shot to make it 12-1, before she netted her sixth goal of the contest at the 14:50 mark to push Springfield's lead to 12. 

Bianca Raniolo picked off a clearing pass from Fay and finished a shot into the empty net to give the Pride a 14-1 lead, before Lindrooth scored to make it 15-1, Springfield. Krull tacked on the Pride's 16th goal with 5:22 left in the contest before Paige Campbell (Lakeville, Mass.) found a cutting Kristen Steidler (Somers, Conn.), who found the back of the net to make it 17-1, Springfield. 

The Pride will return to action on Saturday, April 4 when it will travel to Mount Holyoke for a 12 p.m. contest with the Lyons.
