Box Score Worcester, Mass. - April 10, 2015 - Despite tying the game in the top of the ninth inning, the Springfield College baseball program fell in extra innings to Clark University, 6-5, on Friday afternoon at Granger Field.
With the loss, Springfield falls to 2-15 on the season and 1-7 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play, while the Cougars improve to 6-9 in 2015, including a 3-3 mark in conference.
Junior Ben Bohlke (Nanuet, N.Y.) got the start for Springfield, and dealt 6.1 innings, giving up seven hits, five runs, two of which were earned, and struck out a pair. Matt Butrym (Schenectady, N.Y.) came on in relief and pitched 5.0 innings, striking out four.
For the Cougars, Luke Crocker (Strafford, Vt.) took the rubber and pitched 6.0 innings, giving up six hits, four runs and striking out five. Joshua Dobratz (Southington, Conn.) came on in the seventh and pitched one, before Brett O'Keefe (Brighton, Mass.) came on to pitch 5.0 innings, only giving up a pair of hits and striking out five.
Clark struck first as it scored three runs in the top of the first inning, benefitting from an RBI single from David Eschen (New York, N.Y.), scoring Daniel Lima (Manchester, Conn.), before Zach Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) knocked home Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Mass.) and Mikey Thompson (Northampton, Mass.) broght home Eschen to give the Cougars an early 3-0 advantage.
The Springfield bats were quiet until the top of the sixth inning, when CJ Monroe (Wolcott, Conn.) blasted a 2-RBI double to plate Corey Wilcox (Montville, Conn.) and Mark Joao (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) to cut the Pride's deficit to one. Shane O'Leary (Kings Park, N.Y.) then blasted a line drive down the left-field line to bring home Monroe from second, before Brent Poulin (Atascadero, Calif.) singled, bringing in O'Leary to give Springfield the 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Clark regained its one-run lead when Adam Chochrek (Foxboro, Mass.) doubled to left center, scoring James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.) to even the game at four, before Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) brought in Chocrek with a single up the middle.
Springfield rallied in the top of the ninth inning, and produced a run off the bat of JP Peters (Guilford, Conn.), when the sophomore singled to left, scoring Peter Marsicano (Allentown, N.J.) to even the score at five apiece.
In the bottom of the twelfth inning, Lima led off with a single, before Bonicki followed suit and drove a ball to right, advancing Lima to third. After intentionally walking Eschen to load the bases, before Springfield surrendered the walkoff run.
Springfield will return home on Saturday, April 11 to host a doubleheader with the Cougars beginning at 1 p.m.
