Box Score 2 Norton, Mass. - April 12, 2015 - The Springfield baseball program dropped a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contests to Wheaton College on Sunday afternoon at Sidell Stadium.
With the loss, Springfield falls to 3-18 overall and 2-10 in conference play, while the Lyons improve to 17-7 overall and 11-2 in the NEWMAC.
Up next, Springfield will travel east to take on Brandeis on Monday, April 13 at 3 p.m.
Wheaton 11, Springfield 2 -- Game One
Despite one RBI each from Corey Wilcox (Montville, Conn.) and Billy Paskowski (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.), the Pride fell in game one of the doubleheader, 11-2. Springfield senior Oliver Collette (Spencer, Mass.) received the loss on 5 2/3 innings pitched, seven hits, ten runs (six earned), six walks and three strikeouts.
Lyons's senior Tyler Contillo (Uncasville, Conn.) pushed the hosts ahead, 2-0, in the bottom of the first with a single down the left field line that plated sophomore Joshua LaJoie (Somers, Conn.) and senior Zach Bombard (Belchertown, Mass.).
Paskowski cut the deficit in half in the second with an RBI ground out to short, but Wheaton answered with five runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to secure the eventual 11-2 victory in game one.
Junior Justin Silvestro (Waltham, Mass.) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 3-1 before Contillo smacked a three-run double to left center for a 6-1 advantage. Contillo scored the final run of the frame on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the sixth, junior Matt Lavanchy (Walpole, Mass.) scampered home on a failed pick-off attempt that got by Springfield's first baseman, while Contillo collected his sixth and seventh RBI's of the game with a two-run single through the right side of the infield.
Wheaton relievers Michael Baryski (Walpole, Mass.), Jordan Jenkins (Scituate, Mass.) and Dumas went on, as Wilcox was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the seventh.
Wheaton 13, Springfield 7 -- Game Two
Springfield junior starter Dan Green (Oakland, N.J.) shoulder the loss over three-plus innings of work, 11 hits, nine runs (all earned) and two free passes. Senior Jon Medici (South Portland, Maine) was effective in relief tossing 2 1/3 shutout innings.
Freshman Jimmy Gowen (Brielle, N.J.) improved to 2-0 on the season throwing four innings, zero walks and three strikeouts. Junior starter Jared Clement (Wrentham, Mass.) received the no decision on four innings pitched, eight hits, seven runs (all earned), and two walks.
Senior Anthony Faggiana (Woodbridge, Conn.) gave the Pride a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a two-out, two-run single to right field, which drove in Wilcox and Billy Peterson (Wareham, Mass.).
Clement got out of the inning with a ground out and then both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the third when Wheaton rattled off a five-run frame.
Springfield freshman Josh Sabitsky (Milford, Conn.) cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to right center, that scored Paskowski who doubled with two outs in the previous at-bat, for a 5-3 score.
Wheaton and Springfield went on to exchange back-to-back four-run frames as the Lyons posted a four-spot in the fourth inning and the Pride produced four runs in the fifth.
Springfield responded in the fifth as junior Dan Bergami (Schenectady, N.Y.) had a two-run double to left field, while sophomore JP Peters (Guilford, Conn.) and junior Keith Cotnoir (Westhampton, Mass.) recorded RBI ground outs to bring the game within three runs at 9-7.
In the bottom of the fifth, Contillo came up with the big hit for the Blue and White again, this time with a two-run double to right center that plated De La Cruz and LaJoie. Goodwin-Boyd followed Contillo and promptly crushed a triple to right center for a 12-7 advantage.
The Lyons tacked on another run in the sixth as junior Jimmy Smith (Worcester, Mass.) drove in Lavanchy with a single.
