Box Score Waltham, Mass. - April 13, 2015 - The Springfield College baseball team surrendered five runs in the first inning and wasn't able to recover as it was defeated by Brandeis University, 11-3, on Monday afternoon.
Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) and Shane O'Leary (Kings Park, N.Y.) each posted two hits on the day, while Billy Paskowski (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) cracked a two-run homer. Starting pitcher Jack Weinberger (Sunapee, N.H.) was charged the loss as he gave up seven earned off eight hits in four innings of work.
Every Brandeis starter had at least one hit, six turning in multi-hit games, as the hosts pounded out 17 hits. The Judges also had six players with an RBI, and four who had two each.
Leading the way for Brandeis was junior right fielder Ryan Healy (Carlsbad, Calif.), who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Greg Heineman (Wilbraham, Mass.) also had three hits, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored and Ryan Tettemer (Westfield, Mass.) ripped a double to left-center in the bottom of the Judges' five-run first inning providing the winning run.
The Judges also got some stellar bullpen work, as three relievers combined to hold Springfield to five hits and two runs over the final seven-and-a-third innings. Sophomore Anthony Nomakeo (Wesfield, Mass.) entered in the second inning and went 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs. He struck out four and earned his first win of the season, despite allowing the Pride's big hit on the day, a two-run home run to left by Paskowski in the fifth inning.
Rookie Bradley Bousquet (Athol, Mass.) followed with three perfect innings in the sixth through the eighth, recording one strikeou and Justin Freeman (Chelmsford, Mass.) closed things out, allowing one hit in the ninth.
O'Leary scored the game's first run on a run-scoring double that scored Mark Joao (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), but the hosts answered with the next seven runs of the game, including five in the bottom of the first to seize control of the game.
Springfield will return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday when it plays Emerson College at Wheaton College's Sidell Stadium. First pitch is slated for 3:30 pm.
