Box Score Norton, Mass. - April 14, 2015 - The Springfield College baseball team scored a season-high 12 runs as it defeated Emerson College on Tuesday afternoon at Sidell Stadium. With the win, Springfield improves to 4-19 overall and 3-10 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. With the loss, the Lions remain winless, as it now holds a record of 0-20 and 0-9 in conference.
Jack Baldwin (Westhampton, Mass.) got the nod for the Pride, and pitched a complete game, giving up eight hits and two runs, while also striking out six.
For Emerson, Henry Schwartz (Queens, N.Y.) took the loss, pitching five innings and giving up 12 hits and 11 runs. Danny Johnson (Mashpee, Mass.) came on in relief in the sixth and pitched 1/3 of an inning, before Julian Rifkind (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished off the game pitching 3.2 innings, giving up three hits.
Springfield got started early, as Billy Paskowski (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) drove home Dan Bergami (Schenectady, N.Y.) to give the Pride a 1-0 lead, before Peter Marsicano (Allentown, N.J.) and Mark Joao (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) picked up back-to-back RBI to extend the Pride's lead to three.
After Emerson cut its deficit to two in the bottom half of the inning, Springfield came back with three more runs in the top of the third, including an RBI triple from CJ Monroe (Wolcott, Conn.). Monroe would finish the day with a game-high three runs batted in.
Shane O'Leary (Kings Park, N.Y.) would drive in Marsicano on a sacrifice fly to center to give the Pride an 8-1 lead in the top of the fourth, before Brent Poulin (Atascadero, Calif.) drove home Bergami to push Springfield's lead to eight in the ensuing frame.
With Corey Wilcox (Montville, Conn.) and O'Leary on the bags in the top of the sixth, Monroe cracked a double, which cleared the bags to put Springfield up 11-1, before Poulin drove in Monroe to push the score to 12-1, Springfield.
Emerson earned its second and last run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Kyle Becker (Jericho, N.Y.) doubled to left, scoring Joe Jacobs (Concord, Mass.) to cut the Lions' deficit to 10.
