Box Score Holyoke, Mass. - April 15, 2015 - Taking advantage of a run-down on the opposite side of the diamond, junior Corey Wilcox (Montville, Conn.) was able to cross the plate in the top of the ninth inning to give the Springfield College baseball program a one-run lead, which would stand as the Pride defeated Elms College, 5-4, on Wednesday night at MacKenzie Stadium.
With the win, Springfield has now won two-straight and improves its record to 5-19 on the year, while Elms falls to 8-12 overall.
Matt Butrym (Schenectady, N.Y.) started for the Pride, as the senior pitched 3.1 innings, giving up three hits, two runs and striking out a pair. Mitchell Goodman (Uxbridge, Mass.) came on in relief to pitch 1.2 innings, where he had a hitless outing and struck out two. Jon Medici (South Portland, Maine) and Luke Brown (Winter Park, Fla.) each pitched an inning, before Kenny Manero (Hudson, Mass.) came on in the eighth and pitched 2.0 innings, giving up just one hit and picking up the victory.
For Elms, Cody Lemieux (Torrington, Conn.) pitched 7.1 innings, where he gave up 12 hits, four runs and picked up a strikeout. Kyle Bartlett (Huntington, Mass.) pitched the final 1.2 innings and took the loss, as he gave up one run and four walks.
Elms got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning, when Tim Gelzinis (North Dighton, Mass.) grounded into a fielder's choice, but Andy Vasquez (Queens, N.Y.) was able to score to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.
Elms added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth, when Vasquez hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Jordan Zirna (Berlin, Conn.) to extend the Blazers' lead to a pair. Springfield cut its deficit in half when Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) singled to center, driving home Shane O'Leary (Kings Park, N.Y.), but Elms regained its two-run lead when Ben Ross (Thompson, Conn.) crushed a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Zirna.
After surrendering a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Pride began to rally in the next frame, as Peter Marsicano (Allentown, N.J.) registered a pinch-hit double to center that scored Dan Bergami (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Starr to pull Springfield back to within one.
Marsicano would come all the way around to score after a passed ball allowed the freshman to cross the plate from third to even the score at four apiece.
In the top of the ninth, Bergami got caught in a run down after a pick-off attempt on first base, allowing Wilcox to sneak behind the play and cross the plate to give Springfield its fourth unanswered run and a one-run lead. Manero would picked up the three outs that Springfield needed to claim the 5-4 come-from-behind victory.
Springfield will have a day off on Thursday, before traveling to WPI on Friday for a NEWMAC West Division contest at 3:30 p.m.
