Box Score Springfield, Mass. - April 26, 2015 - The Springfield College baseball team fell to cross-town rival Western New England University on Sunday afternoon, 4-1, on Pat Ricci Field at Trelease Park. With the loss, Springfield falls to 7-23 on the season, while the Golden Bears are now 17-16 overall.
For Springfield, Oliver Collette (Spencer, Mass.) got the nod, as he pitched 6.1 innings, giving up seven hits, four runs, while also picking up four strikeouts. Senior Matt Butrym (Schenectady, N.Y.) came on in relief and threw 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and picking up a strikeout.
For the Golden Bears, sophomore Andrew Mulvey (Bristol, R.I.) tossed a five-hitter to earn his third win on the season, and junior Kevin Marciano (Pepperell, Mass.) knocked in two runs on a triple and a double as Mulvey went seven solid innings, working around eight walks and allowing one run.
The teams traded runs in the opening frame as the Pride took a brief 1-0 lead when Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch. Starr tripled to right center field, Brent Poulin (Atascadero, Calif.) followed with a walk, and on ball four to Dan Bergami, Starr crossed the plate on the pitch in the dirt.
Marciano hit a tie-breaking RBI-triple to the left-center gap in the bottom of the fifth to plate sophomore Kyle Maglio (Glastonbury, Conn.) who had reached on a single to left field to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.
In the seventh inning, Marciano and senior Matt Anzianzo (Belchertown, Mass.) had back-to-back RBI-doubles to give the Golden Bears two insurance runs and a 4-1 advantage.
Springfield will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 28 when it will host Keene State at 3:30 p.m.
