Baseball Finishes Season With Split Against Williams

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Springfield, Mass.- May 3, 2015-The Springfield College baseball team wrapped up its season with a non-conference split on Sunday afternoon with Williams College on Berry-Allen Field.  The Pride finished its season with an overall record of 10-26.

Springfield 7, Williams 6 -- Game 1

Shane O'Leary (Kings Park, N.Y.) paced Springfield in game one with a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate, while Jon Medici (South Portland, Maine) picked up his second win of the season with a perfect seventh inning of relief.  Jack Baldwin (Westhampton, Mass.) pitched the bulk of the innings for the Pride with a six inning, six runs on ten hit performance.

Williams connected for four runs off four hits in the second inning.  Nathan Michalski (San Diego, Calif.) singled to right center to start the rally for the Ephs.  A double to right from Lev Schechter (South Orange, N.J.) put two on for Kirby Neuner (Hackettstown, N.J.), who reached on a fielding error.  Schechter advanced to third on the play, while Michalski would serve as the first run of the game.  A fielder's choice and two singles would put Williams up 4-0 going into the third.

The Eps added an insurance run in the third after Michalski singled to left to score Adam Dulsky (Westport, Conn.).  Dulsky who reached base after a double, was pushed to second from a single from Jack Cloud (Wilmette, Ill.).  Michalski then took the opportunity to plate Dulsky to put the score at 5-0 Williams.

The Pride worked its way on the score board in the bottom of the frame when JP Peters (Guilford, Conn.) connected for a solo shot over the left field wall.

Williams notched a run in the fifth off a suicide bunt from Schechter.  On the play Michalski moved to second and Cloud hustled home, which put the score at 6-1 in favor of the Ephs.

It would not take long for Springfield to respond, as the Pride collected five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth.  Keith Cotnoir (Westhampton, Mass.) started the inning off with a triple to center, followed by a walk from Peters.  Billy Peterson (Wareham, Mass.)  kept things moving with a single to right to score Cotnoir from third.  Corey Wilcox (Montville, Conn.) followed suit with a single of his own, which plated Peters.  CJ Monroe (Wolcott, Conn.)  roped a double down the right field line to score Peterson from second.  The big blow of the inning came off the bat of O'Leary who tied the score at 6-6 with a two-run single to left.

Medici came in for Springfield to retire all three Williams batters in the top of the seventh, to set up what would be a walk-off performance for the second time in as many days for the Pride.  Monroe walked to put a runner on with an out in the bottom of the inning.  O'Leary singled to right to put the winning run on second baseDan Bergami (Schenectady, N.Y.) put Monroe on third with a fielder's choice out.  Anthony Faggiana (Woodbridge, Conn.) stepped up with two outs and the winning run on third base.  The senior dribbled a routine groundball to second base, who botched the throw and allowed Faggiana to step on first and Monroe to cross the plate for the 7-6 Springfield win.

Along with O'Leary's four-hit performance, Springfield's offense was sparked by Peterson with two hits, a run and a RBI.  Wilcox, Monroe and Peters had one RBI a piece.

Williams 9, Springfield 1 - -Game 2

Game two was all Williams, as the team collected nine runs on nine hits in seven innings of play.  Mike DeMille (East Milton, Mass.) was tagged with the loss as the senior gave up seven hits and eight runs.  Four other Springfield pitchers saw time on the mound including Jack Weinberger (Sunapee, N.H.), Luke Brown (Winter Garden, Fla.)Kenny Manero (Hudson, Mass.) and Matt Butrym (Schenectady, N.Y.).

O'Leary continued his hot streak with two hits in game two.  Joao, Bergami and Faggiana were the only other members of the squad to collect hits.

Williams plated six runs in the top of the second to take the early lead.  A single, hit batsman and error loaded the bases for Neuner, who earned a walk to bring home the first run.  A single from Jackson Parese (Williamstown, Mass.) scored two runs to put the score at 3-0.  The final blow of the inning was a three-run home run off the bat of Luke Pierce (Yarmouth, Maine), which put the Ephs up 6-0.

The Ephs struck again in the top of the fourth after Pierce leadoff with a homerun down the right-field line.  Jack Roberts (Vineyard, Haven) earned a base on balls, followed by a single from Dulsky.  A wild pitch would move runners to second and third for Michalski who reached base via a fielding error.  Roberts would serve as the second run of the inning and the eighth run for Williams.

The Pride got on the board in the fourth with a RBI ground out from Peter Marsicano (Allentown, N.J.). Bergami would cross the plate after he led the inning off with a single to right and was advanced to second on an error on Marsicano's groundout back to the pitcher.  Williams still held the 8-1 lead.

Williams squeezed home the final run in the fifth after Neuner took advantage of a fielding error.  The senior doubled down the right field line to start the inning and then advanced to third on a groundout.  After Pierce walked and stole second, Neuner was able to ease home on the miscue on the throw down to second base.  Williams silenced the Pride for the final two innings to seal the 9-1 victory.
