Field Hockey Drops 2-1 Overtime Decision to Wellesley

Wellesley, Mass. - October 15, 2016 - The Springfield College field hockey team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Wellesley College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Wellesley Turf Field.

With the loss, Springfield College is now 5-8 overall with a 1-4 mark in the NEWMAC, while the Blue is 7-6 on the year and 4-3 in league play. Wellesley held a 20-9 shot advantage over the course of the contest, while the Blue also had a 13-5 advantage in penalty corneres on the afternoon.

In net for the Pride, freshman Abbey Doherty (Hampton, N.H.) posted 11 saves in the loss, while Wellesley's Lucy Hurlock (Needham, Mass.) made five stops in the win. 

Just 9:33 into the contest, Wellesley found the back of the net when Nikki Sharkin (Summit, N.J.) found Rachel Hwang (Campbell, Calif.) for her second goal of the season to give the Blue an early 1-0 lead. 

Springfield College evened the score at one apiece when Ann Mahoney (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) set up Maggie Kennedy (Clay, N.Y.) for her eighth goal of the season to make it 1-1 with 1:47 remaining in the first half.

After a scoreless, back-and-forth second half of play, it only took the Blue 5:55 into the first overtime period to clinch the victory, as Sharkin posted her second assist of the day, setting up Hannah Maisano (Gambrills, Md.) for her second game-winner of the year, and third of the season.

Springfield College will return to Stagg Field on Tuesday, October 18, when it will host Clark University at 6 p.m.
