Box Score 2 Kissimmee, Fla. - March 18, 2016 - Competing in its last two games of its Spring Break trip in Florida, the Springfield College softball program split a pair of contests with Hamilton College and Rowan University on Friday morning at the Osceola Softball Complex, host of the 2016 Rebel Spring Games.
With the split, the Pride finishes the trip with an overall record of 6-4. With the loss, Hamilton falls to 1-7 overall, while with the win, Rowan, who finished last season as the No. 22-ranked team according to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), improves to 13-5 overall.
Springfield will return home and will open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play when it travels to Coast Guard for a doubleheader at 12 and 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 26.
Springfield 2, Hamilton 1 (8 Innings) -- Game One
Senior Melissa Nelson (Milford, Conn.) blasted a double off the left-center field fence in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring Emily Reynolds (Charlton, Mass.) from second base, giving the Springfield College softball team its fourth walk-off win of the week over Hamilton, 2-1, on Friday morning.
With the win, Springfield is now 6-3 on the season, while the Continentals fall to 1-9 overall.
Nicole Cring (Cooperstown, N.Y.) began the game in the circle, and pitched 8.0 innings, giving up just six hits, while fanning five Hamilton batters. Her counterpart, Zoe Singer (Ridgewood, N.J.) took the loss, pitching 7.2 innings, giving up five hits and striking out three.
Hamilton struck first in the top of the fifth inning, when Helen Lin (Lubbock, Texas) led off the inning with a double, before Ursula Castiblanco (Leonia, N.J.) singled to right, allowing Lin to cross the plate on a throwing error from the Pride to give the Continentals a 1-0 edge.
The Pride evened the score at one apiece in the bottom half of the frame, when Elizabeth Joseph (Stamford, Conn.) reached on a single, before Rachel Ball (Coventry, R.I.) pinch ran, and was moved to second on a single from Reynolds beat out an infield single. Next up, Jordyn Moquin (Plantsville, Conn.) registered a pinch-hit single to left, scoring Ball from second to even the score at one apiece.
After a scoreless final two innings, Cring came up in the top of the eighth and shut down the Continentals, but was helped by a phenomenal throw to home from Carianna Gasdia (Wakefield, Mass.), which was cut by Kirsten Drobiak (Griswold, Conn.), and sent home to Joseph, who tagged out the Hamilton runner at the plate to preserve the tie.
In the bottom half of the frame, Reynolds was placed on second, and with two outs, Nelson drove a ball off the left-center field fence, plating the sophomore for the game-winning run.
Rowan 11, Softball 4 -- Game Two
Four players registered at least one RBI, but the Pride surrendered six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to Rowan University, falling to the Profs 11-4 in the final game of the Pride's spring break trip.
Loda took the circle for the Pride in the second game, and was strong through 5.0 innings, and finished the contest only allowing one walk and also fanning a Rowan batter.
Rowan tallied its first run in the bottom of the first inning, before extending its lead to four in its next at bats, in the bottom of the second.
The Pride would get the bats going in the top of the fifth, as Nelson singled to center, scoring Reynolds, before Jenna Webb (Harrison, N.Y.) followed suit with an RBI single of her own, plating Loda. Next up, Kirsten Drobiak (Griswold, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Mackenzie Navarro (Taunton, Mass.) to come home, before the Pride evened the score at four apiece when Sam Cox (Longmeadow, Mass.) singled to right bringing in Webb.
Loda would remain strong until the bottom of the sixth, when Rowan touched her for 10 runs, nine of which were earned, capping the six-run inning for the Profs, and the seven-run win.
