Box Score Springfield, Mass. – March 23, 2016 – The Springfield College baseball team surrendered eight runs through the first two innings and could not recover as it dropped an 11-2 decision to Western New England on Wednesday afternoon on Berry-Allen Field.
Western New England entered the game ranked 21st in the nation in the latest D3baseball.com poll and improved to 9-1, while the Pride lost for the first time in its last four outings to fall to 6-3-1.
WNE totaled 13 hits in the game, including a 4-for-6 performance by Daniel Morin (Salem, N.H.) Starter Andrew Mulvey (Bristol, R.I.) earned the win going five innings, allowing just one earned run on one hit while striking out three and walking eight.
Springfield finished the contest with three hits, with Corey Wilcox (Uncasville, Conn.) going 2-for-3 from the plate with a RBI, while Billy Peterson (West Wareham, Mass.) added a single of his own. Jack Weinberger (Sunapee, N.H.) was charged with the loss, as he lasted just 1.2 innings, allowing eight earned off seven hits.
The visiting Golden Bears strung together four runs in the opening inning to take early control of the game. Kevin Marciano (Pepperell, Mass.) led things off with a double down the left field line on the second pitch of the game, and came around to score on Alex Loparco's (Riverside, Conn.) single to right. Ben Lacroix (Branford, Conn.) added a pair of RBI in the inning on a double to left center field.
Western New England added to its lead in the second, tacking on four more runs, including three off the bat by Morin following a towering homer over the left field fence.
The Pride got one back in the bottom of the fourth after it loaded the bases following three-straight walks, and Mark Joao (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) took advantage of a WNE wild pitch to cross the plate.
WNE continued to keep up the offensive pressure with Morin delivering his fourth RBI with a run-scoring single up the middle in the sixth. Eduardo Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) notched a sac fly in the seventh, and Scott Hubener (Mendon, Mass.) drove in a run with the bases loaded after he was hit by a pitch in the eighth.
Springfield accounted for the final run in the bottom of the eighth as Wilcox drilled a two-out single up the middle, scoring Nick LeDuc (Belchertown, Mass.) from second.
Springfield will hit the road to play local-foe Westfield State on Thursday for a 3:30 pm tilt.
