Box Score Amherst, Mass. - April 30, 2016 - The Springfield College baseball team put together a spirited ninth-inning rally, plating four runs, but it wasn't enough as the Pride was defeated by Amherst College, 10-7, on Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Field.
Amherst entered the game ranked 23rd in the country in the latest D3baseball.com poll and is now 10-2 on the year. The loss drops Springfield's record to 6-8-1.
Matt Fraioli (Stamford, Conn.), Evan Moore (Portsmouth, R.I.), Corey Wilcox (Uncasville, Conn.), and JP Peters (Guilford, Conn.) each collected two hits on the day, while Peters drove in a game-best three runs. Starting pitcher Jack Weinberger (Sunapee, N.H.) tossed four innings of no-hit ball and Fletcher Comment (Westbrook, Conn.) was charged with the loss as he gave up four earned on four hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Springfield struck for the game's first three runs in the top of the third. Fraioli laced a double to left center, plating Colin King (Berlin, Conn.) from third. With the bases loaded two batters later, Peters reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Moore to score. Fraioli took advantage of an Amherst throwing error on the play to score from second, giving the visitors a three-run cushion.
Amherst chipped away with a run in the fifth before erupting for five runs in the sixth to take the lead for good. After three more runs in the seventh, Amherst led, 10-3.
However, Springfield did not go quietly, putting together four-consecutive base knocks, including a run-scoring single by Fraioli. Peters once again delivered with the bases loaded, smashing a two-run ground-rule double to center to make it 10-6. Springfield added another run on a Peter Marsicano (Allentown, N.J.) sac fly to climb within two before the rally ended on a strikeout.
The Pride will return home after its five-game roadswing to host Elms on Thursday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
