Baseball Falls to Clark Twice in NEWMAC Doubleheader

Worcester, Mass. - April 16, 2016 - The Springfield College baseball team fell twice to Clark University in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Saturday at Granger Field in Worcester.

With the losses, Springfield is now 10-16-1 on the season and 3-8 in the NEWMAC, while the Cougars improve to 15-18 overall with a league mark of 4-8. The Pride fell in the first game, 11-6, before dropping the second 8-1.

Up next, Springfield will return to Berry-Allen Field on Sunday, April 17 for another conference clash with MIT at 1 p.m.

Clark (Mass.) 11, Springfield 6 -- Game One

Freshman Kyle Allen (Westerly, R.I.) picked up a pair of RBI and went 1-for-3 at the dish, but the Pride fell in the first of two contests on Saturday, 11-6, to Clark at Granger Diamond.

Along with Allen, four other student-athletes posted RBI, as Colin King (Berlin, Conn.), Evan Moore (Portsmouth, R.I.), Matt Fraioli (Stamford, Conn.) and Peter Marsicano (Allentown, N.J.) all drove in runs in the first game.

Senior Dan Green (Oakland, N.J.) got the nod for the Pride, and pitched 6.0 innings, striking out four, while Joey Gamache (Lebanon, Conn.) game on in relief and pitched 2.0 frames, holding the Cougars to just one hit.

Clark got started in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs, before the Pride answered in the top of the third, when Moore drove in Marsicano to make it 2-1, Clark. The Cougars would add three runs to its lead in the bottom half of the frame, before Springfield tacked on four runs to even the game at five apiece in the top of the fourth.

Marsicano started the rally with a single to right, scoring JP Peters (Guilford, Conn.), before Allen drove a single to right, scoring Fraioli and Brandon Drabinski (Lisbon, Conn.) to cut the Pride's deficit to one. Next up, King grounded out to short, but Marsicano would cross the plate to make it a 5-5 game.

Clark would answer in the bottom of the fourth when the Cougars touched Green for four more runs to make it 9-5, beofre Fraioli singled in the top of the fifth to score Peters and make it a three-run game.

The Cougars would add two more in the bottom of the sixth and keep the Pride's bats quiet to come away with the victory.

Clark (Mass.) 8, Springfield 1 -- Game Two

In the second game, Corey Wilcox (Uncasville, Conn.) became two hits closer to his 100th career hit, but the Pride would fall 8-1 to Clark to allow the Cougars to complete the series sweep on Saturday afternoon at Granger Field.

Wilcox, who went 2-for-4 out of the three spot in the lineup, has now posted 90 career hits in his time with the Pride. Additionally, Drabinski went 2-for-4 and picked up Springfield's lone RBI of the contest.

Sophomore Kyle Naples (Berlin, Conn.) got the start and lasted 4.0 innings, striking out one, while Jake Frenchman (Bellmore, N.Y.) tossed the last 4.0 frames, giving up three hits and striking out four.

The Cougars would score five in the bottom of the first to get off to an early 5-0 start, before adding three more runs in the bottom of the second and fourth to make it 8-0 when Naples left the game.

After Frenchman kept the Cougars' bats quiet, Drabinski picked up his second RBI of the afternoon, singling to left, scoring Wilcox to make it 8-1, Clark.

The Cougars would keep the Pride contained and pick up the final three outs in the top of the ninth to seal the win.
