Baseball Suffers NEWMAC Setback to MIT in Sunday Matinee

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - April 17, 2016 - The Springfield College baseball team suffered a 17-3 loss in a New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matinee with MIT at Berry-Allen Field on Sunday. The loss sends the Pride to 10-17-1 overall and 3-10 in NEWMAC play.

Senior Jack Baldwin (Southampton, Mass.) got the start for the Pride, striking out two in 5.1 innings of work. Freshman Cam Rivest (Agawam, Mass.) and Tristian Suedmeier (Essex, Conn.) worked in relief for Springfield.

Senior Colin King (Berlin, Conn.), freshman Matt Fraioli (Stamford, Conn.) and senior Billy Peterson (West Wareham, Mass.) all collected a pair of hits for the Pride, while junior Mike Jamieson (New Fairfield, Conn.) reached base three times and scored once. Senior Corey Wilcox (Uncasville, Conn.) collected a hit, putting his career total at 91.

MIT got off to a quick start in the first inning, scoring two runs with two outs. A one out single and a ground out put a runner on second with two away for Alec Echevarria (Chula Vista, Calif.), who clubbed a double into left field, putting the Engineers up 1-0. Nate Rodman (Corvallis, Ore.) followed with a single to score Echevarria and cap the scoring.

The Engineers added to the lead in the third when John Drago (Peoria, Ariz.) and Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.) led off with singles before Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Echevarria lined a single into left field to score Drago, Rodman grounded out to first, scoring Greenwood, before a two-out, two run error scored Filiere and Echevarria.

Springfield got on the scoreboard in the third inning, scoring two runs on a two-out double from Brandon Drabinski (Lisbon, Conn.) A lead-off and two-out single put runners on first and second for Drabinski, who launched a fly ball to dead center field just beyond the reach  of Greenwood's outstretched arm.

MIT pushed the lead back up to five in the sixth inning when Drago lined a two-out double into the alleyway in the right center, scoring David Heller (Fair Lawn, N.J.) from third base.

MIT and Springfield each plated runs in the eighth. The Engineers scored when Filiere walked and stole second and third. With two outs and Max Lancaster (Attleboro, Mass.) on first, Lancaster got into a run down, allowing Filiere to score before he was tagged out. The Pride scored when Matt Fraioli (Stamford, Conn.) lined a two-out double down the line in left field, scoring Mike Jamieson (New Fairfield, Conn.) from first base.

MIT made it 9-3 with a run in the top of the eighth, taking advantage of a hit batter and a pair of wild pitches to put a runner at third before a fielder's choice plated the ninth Engineer run. The Engineers would add eight more in the top of the ninth to clinch the 17-3 win.

Next, Springfield will hit the road and take on Rhode Island College in non-conference action on Monday, April 18 at 3:30 p.m.
