Box Score Boston, Mass. - April 19, 2016 - The Springfield College baseball team held on for 7-6 victory against Emerson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at Campanelli Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The win snaps Springfield's six-game slide as it improved to 11-18-1, 4-10 in league play. The loss sets Emerson back to 4-25, 0-14.
Corey Wilcox (Uncasville, Conn.) produced a 3-for-5 day at the plate and scored two runs, while Billy Peterson (West Wareham, Mass.) went 3-for-4. Both Peterson and Peter Marsicano (Allentown, N.J.) knocked in a pair of runs, while Tyler Kelly (Alexandria, Va.) dazzled on the mound, scattering seven hits in six innings, allowing just one earned run en route to the win. Jake Frenchman (Bellmore, N.Y.) earned the save in the ninth.
Back-to-back one-out singles by Matt Fraioli (Stamford, Conn.) and Peterson set up a two-run double by Marsicano in the second to put Springfield ahead early. The visiting Pride added two more runs in the third, using a two-out RBI double by Mike Jamieson (New Fairfield, Conn.) and a run-scoring base knock by Fraiolo.
After Emerson got one back in the fourth, Springfield loaded the bases to begin the fifth. Wilcox crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Peterson gave Springfield a 7-1 cushion with a two-run single.
The hosts did not go away quietly, tacking on a run in seventh before putting together a spirited rally in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, the Lions drew back-to-back walks with the bases loaded before a two-run double cut Springfield's lead to one. However, Frenchman quieted the comeback, getting a groundout to Fraioli to end the game.
Springfield will play its home finale on Friday afternoon when it hosts WPI at 3:30 pm on Berry-Allen Field.
