Box Score Springfield, Mass. - April 2, 2016 - Led by six goals from Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) the Springfield College women's lacrosse team powered past visiting MIT, 13-10, on a rainy, Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.
Springfield improved to 7-2, 2-0 in conference action, while the loss drops MIT to 6-3, 1-1 as the two teams met for the first time since MIT rallied past Springfield to win the 2015 NEWMAC Championship.
Corsano put together a dynamic performance, pumping in six goals, including five in the first half, to go along with four draw controls. Heather Raniolo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) tallied three goals, two assists, and caused three turnovers, while Ann Mahoney (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) caused four turnovers. Gabby Anderson (Mahopac, N.Y.) produced 11 saves between the pipes to earn the win.
For MIT, Emily Young (La Jolla, Calif.) notched a game-high seven points on six goals and an assists. Isabella Didio (Jenkintown, Pa.) tacked on two goals and Christine Jiang (Canton, Mich.) won a game-high five draw controls. Eva Boal (Princeton Junction, N.J.) was charged with the loss as she made nine saves.
The hosts jumped out to a 5-0 lead just under 20 minutes into the first half behind four goals from Corsano and an unassisted marker by Julia Bireley (Franklin, Mass.). MIT answered with a pair of goals from Didio and Kira Schott (New Canaan, Conn.) 3:21 apart to make it a 5-2 game, only to have Corsano convert a free-position strike to give the Pride a 6-2 cushion at the half.
The Engineers pumped in four goals in the opening 9:56 of the second half, including a pair from Young to even things at six apiece. However, Springfield would not be denied as Heather Raniolo took over, delivering three goals and two assists in a 7-0 spurt for the Pride, which put them comfortably ahead, 13-6, with 6:11 left in regulation. Bireley, Kristen Steidler (Somers, Conn.), and Katie Stallone (Seaford, N.Y.) also scored in the scoring burst for the Pride, which came in a 7:16 span.
Young did everything she could to bring MIT back, tallying four-straight goals in 1:16 down the stretch, but the Pride were able to hang on for the critical league win.
Springfield will continue conference play on Wednesday when it travels to face Coast Guard at 7 pm.
