Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. - April 23, 2016 - After falling 12-4 to WPI on Friday night, the Springfield College baseball dropped a pair more on Saturday, as the Pride was swept by the Engineers in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) West Divisional Series on Saturday afternoon. The two games were played at Granger Field on the campus of Clark University.
With the losses, the Pride fell to 11-21-1 overall with a conference record of 4-13, while WPI improves to 25-10 overall and 12-5 in league play. The Pride dropped the first of two games, 19-2, before falling in the second, 17-3.
Up next, Springfield will close out the 2016 season at MCLA on Monday, April 24 at 3:30 p.m.
WPI 19, Springfield 2 -- Game One
Brian Johnson (East Haddam, Conn.) got the nod for the Pride in the first game of the doubleheader, and pitched 5.0 innings, giving up 11 hits and seven earned runs, while also striking out four and walking three. Ken Manero (Hudson, Mass.) and Jake Tarbox (Lebanon, Conn.) came on in relief for Springfield.
The Pride was limited to just three hits in the game, as Colin King (Berlin, Conn.), JP Peters (Guilford, Conn.) and Billy Peterson (West Wareham, Mass.) all had base knocks for Springfield.
The Engineers got to work early, nabbing a run in the bottom of the first, before adding four more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-0 lead over the Pride. After one more run in the fifth, and four more in the sixth to take a 10-0 lead, WPI scored nine in the bottom of the seventh to make it 19-0 heading to the eighth.
The Pride rallied in the top of the ninth inning, as Peters tripled to left center, scoring Corey Wilcox (Uncasville, Conn.) and King to make it 19-2, but WPI was able to hold on for the win.
WPI 17, Springfield 3 -- Game Two
It was a nine-run bottom of the second inning that was the demise of Springfield in game two, as the Engineers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, finishing the series with a 17-2 win over Springfield.
Kyle Naples (Kensington, Conn.) took the mound for the Pride, and pitched 2.0 innings, striking out four, while Cam Rivest (Agawam, Mass.) came on to pitch two frames, giving up four hits and three runs. Mitchell Goldman (Uxbridge, Mass.) pitched 3.0 innings, allowing four hits from the Engineers, while Tristian Suedmeier (Essex, Conn.) pitched one inning, holding WPI to just one base knock.
After scoring nine in the bottom of the second, the Engineers followed with three in the bottom of the third, two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh to take a convincing 17-0 lead over the Pride heading to the eighth.
In the top of the seventh, Peter Detrik (Fairfield, Conn.) grounded out to first, but Patrick Coan (Pawcatuck, Conn.) scored to get the Pride on the board, before Joey Gamache (Lebanon, Conn.) grounded out to second, plating Nick Trentalange (West Babylon, N.Y.) to cut the Springfield's deficit to 15.
The Pride would rally for another in the top of the ninth inning when Peters drove in Evan Moore (Portsmouth, R.I.), but the Engineers would escape with the 14-run victory.
