Box Score Cortland, N.Y. - May 21, 2016 - Capping off a historical 2016 season, the Springfield College women's lacrosse team dropped a 12-10 decision to Catholic University in the NCAA Championship Tournament Sweet 16 on Saturday afternoon at Stadium Red on the campus of SUNY Cortland.
With the loss, Springfield, which earned a spot in the NCAA Championship Tournament Sweet 16 for the first time in program history with a win over No. 9 Bates in the second round last weekend, finishes 2016 with an overall record of 16-6, including a program-record 16 wins in one season.
Leading the Pride was an impressive offensive performance from sophomore Kristen Steidler (Somers, Conn.), who posted five points, including four goals and one assist, while sophomore attack Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) and Heather Raniolo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) registered two goals apiece. Additionally, senior attack Bianca Raniolo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) posted three assists, while in net, junior goalkeeper Gabby Anderson (Mahopac, N.Y.) notched 12 saves in the defeat.
The Cardinals held a 32-16 advantage in shots over 60 minutes of play, while also edging the Pride in the ground ball battle, 21-17. Catholic also posted 15 draw controls to Springfield's nine.
Following a Catholic goal from Alexis Bosilovic (Gibsonia, Pa.) just 2:07 into the contest, the Pride responded with a pair of goals, including a free-position from Corsano and Steidler's first of the game to make it 2-1 Pride, 7:39 into the game. Following a goal from Bosilovic to make it a 2-2 game, the Cardinals regained its one-goal lead when Laura Dunn (Fairfax, Va.) converted a free-position chance of her own, but the Pride once again responded with a three-goal spurt, including markers from MK Jaeger (Plymouth, Mass.), Heather Raniolo, and Corsano to make it 5-3, Pride, with 11:05 to play in the first half.
From there, Catholic closed the gap with two goals in 34 seconds, but Steidler took a feed from Jaeger and found the back of the net to make it 6-5, Springfield, heading into the break.
The Pride came out in the second half and pushed its lead to two off a goal from Heather Raniolo, but the Cardinals responded with a goal to keep it within one. From there Stephanie Hyslip (Hanson, Mass.) found the back of the net, before Steidler completed her hat trick to make it a 9-6 game with 14:20 left.
Catholic then scored the next five goals of the game over a span of 9:32 seconds to take an 11-9 lead over the Pride, before Steidler stopped the run with a goal that brought it back to within one. The Cardinals were able to fend off the Pride's late rally, and notched an insurance goal with 2:08 to play to seal the win.
