Springfield, Mass. - September 22, 2016 - The Springfield College women's tennis team continued its winning ways with a 9-0 victory over the University of Saint Joseph's at Appleton Courts on Thursday.
Springfield has now strung together four-straight victories to improve to 4-3 this season.
The hosts won all three doubles matches by identical 8-1 decisions. Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) took the top spot, while Nicole Piazza (Portland, Conn.) and Rachel Litchfield (Northbridge, Mass.) earned the point at No. 2. Springfield No. 3 doubles team this afternoon once again proved to by Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) and Cara Freadman (Richmond, Mass.).
The win proved to be especially memorable for Piazza, who was going up against her mother, Karen, who was the head coach for the Blue Jays.
In singles action, London battled her way to another victory at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 5-7, 10-7, while Parrish earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 2. Both Kelsey Whelpley (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and Fiona Stickney (Bayport, N.Y.) won by 6-2, 6-1 margins at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively, while Stephanie Foster (Woodbridge, Conn.) grinded out a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3. Additionally, Springfield took the win at No. 6 behind a dominant performance from Addie Kendall (Lakeville, Mass.), who picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
The Pride will return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action when it hosts Smith in an important conference showdown next Tuesday at 5:00 pm.
