Springfield, Mass. - October 28, 2017 - In its final home game of the season, the Springfield College field hockey team was bested by MIT, 4-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday at Stagg Field.
The Engineers, who were ranked 14th nationally in the latest NFHCA Coaches Poll, improved to 14-2, 7-1 in conference play, while the Pride dropped to 12-7, 4-4.
Springfield held a 16-14 edge in shots for the game and took nine of the game's 17 penalty corners. Springfield's Emmalie Drake (Pittsford, N.Y.) made six saves in the loss, while Grace Moore was credited with nine stops for MIT.
MIT's Amanda Garofalo and Katie Notarangelo each produced a pair of goals, and Taylor Grey registered a pair of assists.
Garofalo netted her first of the game at the 18:11 mark when she made the most of the Engineers second penalty corner of the afternoon. After sending in the initial bid to Emma Majercak, Garofalo took a feed on the left wing and blistered a shot over Drake's glove for the game's first marker.
Just over 10 minutes later, Garofalo doubled the visitors lead when she collected a rebound after a Tirzah McMillan (Haddonfield, N.J.) defensive save and slotted home a goal. MIT struck again 2:04 later and made it a 3-0 contest after Katie Notarengelo took a Taylor Grey pass and ripped a shot from 10 yards out.
MIT tallied the game's final goal at the 46:49 mark on a perfectly executed penalty corner that resulted in Grey finding Notarangelo all alone on the back post for her second goal of the contest.
Despite holding an 11-7 edge in shots in the second half and controlling much of the possession, Springfield was unable to find the back of the cage as it dropped the conference game by a 4-0 decision.
