Baseball Prevails Over Elms, 10-9, in Extra Innings

Box Score

Holyoke, Mass. - April 17, 2017 - Senior JP Peters (Guilford, Conn.) came up with a critical RBI single in the top of the 10th inning to score Mark Joao (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), which proved to be the game-winning run in the Springfield College baseball team's extra-inning victory over Elms College at MacKenzie Field on Monday night.

With the win, the Pride is now 12-10 on the year, while the Blazers fall to 8-15 overall.

Freshman pitcher Zach Kerr (Niskayuna, N.Y.) pitched the final 3.0 innings, holding Elms to just one hit as he picked up his second win of the season. Senior Tyler Kelly (Alexandria, Va.) got the nod and went 5.2 innings, while Jake Gleason (South Dennis, Mass.) came on for 1.1 frames of releif.

Joao led the Pride offensively as he went 2-for-4 at the dish, scoring three runs while driving in one. Senior Mike Jamieson (New Fairfield, Conn.) also went 2-for-3, as he also drove in one and scored a pair to help lead the Pride to victory.

The Pride got to work early, as Jamieson and Joao both drove in runs in the top of the first, before the Pride pushed its lead to five in the top of the fourth, as Fraioli, Patrick Coan (Pawcatuck, Conn.) and Alex Denoyelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) all drove in one run apiece.

The Blazers would combine for nine runs in the bottom of the fourth and bottom of the sixth to take a 9-6 lead over the Pride, but Springfield College answered with four runs in the top of the seventh, including a two-run single from Marcelino Diaz (Hartford, Conn.) and another RBI single from Coan, before Fraioli scored on a wild pitch to even the score at nine apiece.

After the two sides were still tied at nine after nine innings, Joao singled and then advance to second on a wild pitch, setting up Peters for a clutch RBI single to short which scored the junior to give the Pride a one-run lead. Kerr took the mound in the bottom half of the frame and picked up three outs to seal the win.

Next up, Springfield College will return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play when it takes on Emerson in Boston, Mass. on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
