Box Score Springfield, Mass. - September 23, 2017 - The Springfield College field hockey team was toppled by nationally-ranked Babson College, 6-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) on Stagg Field on Saturday afternoon.
Babson, which entered the game ranked No. 2 in the country in the latest NFHCA National Poll, improved to 8-0, 2-0, while Springfield dropped its second-straight outing to fall to 5-2, 0-1.
The Beavers' have now strung together an 18-game road winning streak, which is currently the longest in Division I, II or III. With its first-half goal, Springfield became the first conference time to score against the Beavers in over 529 minutes going back to last October.
Babson jumped on the board just over 11 minutes into the contest with Jacki Merrigan (Canton, Mass.) poked a shot over the goal line after Catherine Gilman's (Cohasset, Mass.) bid slipped behind the Springfield backline. The Beavers added to their lead at the 29:12 mark after Ashley Tango (Reading, Mass.) blistered a shot from the right wing that slipped inside the post.
Springfield cut into the lead with just 2:20 left in the first half as it took advantage of its second penalty corner of the afternoon. Dani Sweet (Charlton, Mass.) centered a pass to Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H.), who cranked a shot into the back of the cage.
Coming out of a timeout with just over 25 minutes left in regulation, Elise Towers (Cicero, N.Y.) cleaned up a scramble in front of the cage, putting the visitors back on top, 3-1. Tango drilled her second marker of the game with 17:32 on the clock as she let one fly from 12 yards out, before Gilman and Tori Roche (Andover, Mass.) each scored 1:34 apart in the final six-plus minutes of play.
Emmalie Drake (Pittsford, N.Y.) was credited with 13saves, while Deirdre Berry (Longmeadow, Mass.) earned the win after making one save.
Springfield will host Williams on Wednesday night at 6:30 in another non-conference showdown.
